Zwickau Overview
Zwickau is the fourth-largest city in Saxony after Leipzig, Dresden, and Chemnitz, and it is home to the Zwickau District. The West Saxon city is situated in the valley of the Zwickau Mulde (German: Zwickauer Mulde; progression: Mulde→ Elbe→ North Sea) and is part of a group of cities located in the forelands of the Elster and Ore Mountains, which extend from Plauen in the southwest to Dresden in the northeast. The government of the southwestern region of Saxony was based in Zwickau from 1834 until 1952.
Possibly referring to Svarog, the Slavic god of fire and the sun, the city’s name is of Sorbian origin. The West Saxon University of Zwickau has campuses in Zwickau, Markneukirchen, Reichenbach im Vogtland, and Schneeberg (Erzgebirge). It is the city where composer Robert Schumann was born.
As a cradle of Audi’s forerunner Horch and as the seat of the Sachsenring company, which produced (then still as VEB Sachsenring Automobilwerke Zwickau) East Germany’s most popular cars, the Trabant, Zwickau has historically been one of the centers of the German automotive industry, producing cars such as Auto Union and Volkswagen that have lasted over a century.
The 166-kilometer (103-mile) long Zwickau Mulde River flows from the Vogtland to Colditz Castle at the other end. The Silver Road, the longest tourist route in Saxony, connects Dresden and Zwickau.
Zwickau is reachable by car via the nearby Autobahns A4 and A72, by train at the central railway station (Zwickau Hauptbahnhof), by light aircraft at a public airfield, and by bicycle along the Mulderadweg along the Zwickau Mulde River.
History
Since the 7th century A.D., Sorbs have settled around Zwickau—a Germanization of the Slavic toponym Wikawa, a name derived from the sun god and fire god Svarozi. German settlers began arriving in the 10th century, and the native Slavs were Germanized. Terretorio Zcwickaw (in Medieval Latin) was mentioned in 1118 as an important trading place. During the 13th century, Franciscans and Cistercians lived in the settlement, granted a town charter in 1212. From 1290 to 1323, Zwickau was a free imperial city before being given to the Margraviate of Meissen. With the discovery of silver in the Schneeberg in 1470, extensive mining increased despite regional mining starting in 1316. As a result of silver ore deposits in the Erzgebirge, Zwickau developed into one of Saxony’s most important economic and cultural centers in the 15th and 16th centuries.
Its nine churches include the Gothic church of St. Mary (1451-1536), with a spire 285 feet (87 meters) high and a bell weighing 51 tons. Peter Breuer carved and painted a pietà in carved and painted wood for the church’s altar, and Michael Wohlgemuth painted eight paintings.
There is an altarpiece attributed to Lucas Cranach, the elder in the late Gothic church of St. Catharine, where Thomas Müntzer served as the eleventh pastor (1520–22). The city hall was built in 1404 and has been rebuilt many times. There are documents in the municipal archives that date back to the 13th century.
Coal mining
The first mention of coal mining dates back to 1348. Mining on an industrial scale began in the early 19th century, however. The coal mines of Zwickau and the neighboring coalfields of Oelsnitz-Lugau contributed significantly to the industrialization of Zwickau and the region.
Carl Wolf invented an improved gas-detecting safety mining lamp in 1885 and patented the invention, the first in the world. “Friemann & Wolf” was founded by him and his business partner Friemann. The coal industry ceased to exist in 1978. It is estimated that over 230 million tonnes have been mined to a depth of more than 1,000 meters. There was a closure of the last Coke oven in Zwickau in 1992.
The coal mining industry led to the development of many sectors in the city: mining equipment, iron and steel works, textiles, machinery, and chemical products, as well as porcelain, paper, glass, dyestuffs, wire goods, tinware, stockings, and curtains. Additionally, there were steam sawmills, diamond and glass polishing works, iron foundries, and breweries.
Automotive industry
A Horch automobile factory was established in 1904, followed by an Audi factory in 1909. Both brands retained their independent trademarks despite being merged into Auto Union in 1932. Ferdinand Porsche and Robert Eberan von Eberhorst developed the Auto Union racing cars, driven by Bernd Rosemeyer, Hans Stuck, Tazio Nuvolari, and Ernst von Delius, which became known around the globe. It was located near the Horch Auto Union plant in Zwickau. That the Nazi government operated a satellite camp of the Flossenbürg concentration camp during World War II. Osterstein Castle was converted into a brutal labor prison camp by the Nazi administration. 1945 marked the liberation of both camps by the U.S. Army. Military administration was handed over to the Soviet Army on Aug 1, 1945. The Soviets dismantled Horch and Audi’s factories; Auto Union relocated to Ingolstadt, Bavaria, where it became the current Audi. As a result of the East German government’s seizure of all large companies in 1948, all large companies were closed.
Uranium mining
SDAG Wismut built two major industrial facilities in the city: the uranium mill in Zwickau-Crossen, which produced uranium concentrate from ores mined in the Erzgebirge and Thuringia, and the machine-building plant in Zwickau-Cainsdorf, which built equipment for the East German uranium mines and mills. A private investor acquired the Wismut machine-building plant after the end of uranium milling in 1989.
Economy
As a result of German reunification, Trabant production was discontinued, but Volkswagen built a new factory, and Sachsenring is now a supplier to the automobile industry. Volkswagen-Saxony Ltd. (a V.W. subsidiary) has headquarters in Zwickau’s northern part.
Education
Zwickau has two campuses and about 4700 students at the University of Applied Sciences Zwickau.
It is a school of the Evangelical Lutheran Free Church in Zwickau for children in grades 1-4.
Transport
Dresden-Erfurt A4 (Dresden-Erfurt) and Hof-Chemnitz A72 (Hof-Chemnitz) Autobahns are close to the city.
The Zwickau Hauptbahnhof is located on the Dresden-Werdau line, which connects Nuremberg and Dresden. Additionally, there are rail connections to Leipzig, Karlovy Vary, and Cheb in the Czech Republic. It is also the prototype of the so-called Zwickau Model for such systems, which is the core element of Zwickau’s urban public transportation system.
Leipzig-Altenburg is the nearest airport but does not have scheduled commercial flights. Leipzig/Halle Airport and Dresden Airport are the closest major airports, offering national and international flights.
Museums
Three museums are located in the city center: an art museum from the 19th century and the houses of priests from the 13th century. There is a Robert-Schumann museum right around the corner. Several museums in the city have collections devoted to the city’s history and a mineralogical, palaeontological, and geological collection that contains specimens from the city and the nearby Ore Mountains.
Schumann was born in Zwickau, the birthplace of the composer. In the marketplace, you can still see the house where he was born in 1810. It is now a museum dedicated to Robert Schumann, called Robert Schumann House.
At the August Horch Museum Zwickau, you can learn about the histories of Audi and Horch automobile factories. The museum is located along the European Route of Industrial Heritage (EIRH) and is an anchor point.
