Randers Overview

With a population of 62,623 people, Randers is the 6th largest city in Denmark. It’s also one of the most important places in Denmark and is home to the municipality’s administrative headquarters.

Randers, a newly designated world heritage site, is a thriving market town that was established back in medieval times where you’ll be able to see many of its fifteenth-century timber-framed houses. One of the many historic buildings you’ll be able to visit includes St Martin’s Church which is also from that period. At the beginning of the 20th century, Randers quickly became one of the most important industrial towns in the country. But it saw itself outpaced by cities like Aarhus and Aalborg in this process. This made it difficult for people at home to continue living there and contribute to these industries. A small increase in population numbers has been observed over the past few years. This could be a sign that an end to population decline is in sight.

Population

Etymology

The town’s name is Ranrosia and it appeared on coins made from 1089 to 1248, but all of these cannot be verified as belonging to any human being. It then appeared on coins made 1145-57 by Svend Grathe. Language historians have found that the Latin word Randrusium, Icelandic word Randrosi, and the early Danish name Rondrus all mean ‘Randers’, referring to the city of Randers in Denmark. The name of Randers seems to stem from Rand (hillside) and Aros (river mouth), which could mean “town on the hillside by the river mouth”. The modern form “Randers” did not come into use until the 17th century.

History

Around the 12th century, a town began to form in the southern part of Jutland. This town was named Randers and later became a possession of the Danish monarchy. The rebellion of The Peasants in Randers was widely documented by historians. The uprising led to the death of Canute, who had been trying to take over England. For example, a chronicle written at Essenbæk Abbey tells of a fire that ravaged the city and resulted in a significant loss of lives. The Danish King of Denmark, Eric IV, led a civil uprising against his father in 1246. The city was burned down and rebuilt 3 times due to this revolt. On the main street in a small town known as the fishing village, is where Niels Ebbesen claimed his kill and to which the locals owe their independent status. This prompted further rebellion against the Germans, resulting in Ebbesen’s death in Skanderborg Castle. People erected a memorial statue to him today outside Randers Town Hall.

King Valdemar IV tried to refill Denmark’s government after being stripped of it by the Holsteiners. After he mortgaged his country away, the town was finally able to fix damages and was reinforced with the protection they were often called Randershus (“Randers Fortress”). The unattended but fortified city in Vordingborg was captured by the local nobles who were unhappy with the royal government. King Valdemar then launched an attack on the city with all his troops in 1359. The medieval market town saw profits during this time as Vordingborg became a trade hub between Denmark and Germany.
