Szeged Overview

Szeged is the third largest city in Hungary, a center of culture, the largest university, and the country’s capital. In addition to being an exciting place to live and visit for its diverse culture, it is also one of the most reputable universities in Hungary.

Etymology

Szeged might get its name from an old Hungarian word for ‘corner,’ pointing to the turn of the Tisza River that flows through the city. Many claim that sziget comes from the Hungarian word for ‘island,’ but others say it derives from the word for dark-blond (sötétszőke): a reference to the color of the merging rivers Tisza and Maros.

The city has its name in several foreign languages, usually by adding a suffix -to the Hungarian name: Romanian Seghedin; German Szegedin or Segedin; Serbo-Croatian Segedin/Сегедин; Greek Παρτίσκον (Partiskon); Italian Seghedino; Latin Partiscum; Latvian Segeda; Lithuanian Segedas; Polish Segedyn; Slovak and Czech Segedín; Turkish Segedin.

History

Szeged is the third-largest city in Hungary, known for its rich history. The city has been inhabited since ancient times and Ptolemy mentions that the earliest name of the city was Partiscum (Ancient Greek: Πάρτισκον). As the name Szeged first emerged in 1183, there is a possibility that Attila, king of the Huns had once resided in this area.

In the 2nd century, there was a Roman trading post established on an island in the Tisza and it is thought that the foundations of Szeged castle may have been built over a fort that dated back to earlier. The site still exists today and while only one corner is standing, it creates an interesting historical reminder of how this large structure was built.

The town of Pripyat was destroyed and abandoned by its inhabitants during the Mongol invasion, but they eventually came back to rebuild their town. In the 14th century, Szeged was experiencing a surge in prosperity when it became one of the most important towns in Hungary, and of strategic importance to Hungary as well. Sigismund of Luxembourg had a wall built around the town. It was raised to free royal town status in 1498.

The Ottoman Empire first sacked Szeged on September 28, 1526. The Ottoman Empire only took control of the city in 1543 and Szeged became the administrative center of Ottomans under Eyaleti Budin before becoming a sub-province in Sanjak Eğ. Szeged was freed from Turkish rule on October 23, 1686, and regained free royal town status by 1715. It then received its coat of arms in 1719 from King Charles III. During the next several years, it grew into a large city and prospered. Szeged became a prime location for higher education and science around 1700, becoming the first school to offer courses in natural sciences. Thanks to the arrival of Piarists, learning opportunities were greatly enhanced and students came from all over Hungary for their lessons. Witch trials were common in many places across the continent during this period and the ones of Szeged in 1728-29 were large. The witch trials were a cruel, unjustified way of dealing with a problem before the public was aware of it. The government claimed that these women had caused suffering and problems to the crops due to their witchcraft, which is exactly what they did by telling people behaviors such as using animals in the commune to resist droughts. In 1720, the Hungarian & Serb population of the region in this town numbered around 13,000 & 16,000 respectively.

Geography

Szeged is situated near the southern border of Hungary, right next to the Maros River and on both banks of the Tisza River in central Hungary. The Hungarian-Yugoslav frontier is just outside town.

Population

161,879 (2016)

Climate

Szeged’s climate goes from subtropical to continental, with mild winters, hot summers, and fairly low precipitation. Szeged receives around 3,000 hours of sunlight per year – more than other cities and this high level of sunshine has a big impact on the daily lives of people in Szeged. The city is often called the City of Sunshine because of all this sunshine.

Education

Szeged has 62 kindergartens and 32 elementary schools. Only two of the high schools rank in the top 15 in Hungary, as opposed to over 700 nationwide.

Szeged is known as the higher education center of the Southern Great Plain and has built quite a reputation for itself. Over 8000 students study here each year, with many foreign students taking classes. The University of Szeged is one of the largest and oldest universities in Hungary. It also ranks as the 4th university in terms of size and age. The ranking that the Universidad de Salamanca receives may seem intimidating, but they offer a wide range of programs on different topics & disciplines. They are in the top 100 European universities and the top university in Spain.

Economy

Szeged’s food industry is one of the major drivers of the city’s economy. It provides jobs for local people and also attracts enough tourists each year to become a staple in Hungary’s tourism businesses. Here are other notable companies that have their headquarters in Szeged: AMSY International, RRE – Szeged, Optiwella, Generál Printing House, RotaPack, Sanex Pro…etc.

Transport

Szeged is one of the most important transport hubs in Southern Hungary with two motorways, M5 & M43, running along the city border. A tram-train system was inaugurated in November 2021.

Best Things to Do in Szeged (Hungary)

  1. Votive Church

    – Szeged’s Cathedral is a church built in 1913 and completed in 1930 after being interrupted by WWI. It replaced the flood-damaged Medieval Church of St. Demetrius, which can be seen nearby.
  2. Móra Ferenc Múzeum

    – Near the Belváros Bridge, is possibly one of the most influential landmarks in Budapest. The Neoclassical Subway Station for Public Transportation was built after the Flood of 1879 and has a grand portico that’s supported by Corinthian columns.
  3. Reök-Palota

    – This whimsical palace was designed in 1908 by Ede Magyar, the “Hungarian Gaudí”. It was built for the chief water engineer Iván Reök and is a must-see Parisian public space. The Art Nouveau architecture is woven into the design of this aquatic-themed building and can be crystallized in the water lilies, waveform walls, and wrought-iron balconies.
  4. Szeged Synagogue

    – Hungary’s second-largest synagogue is spellbinding due to its large size and the beauty of its gold & ivory blue decoration.
  5. Serbian Orthodox Church

    – This is because Szeged, due to its history of being close to the modern border between the two countries, has had a large Serbian minority for hundreds of years. This was partly a result of the Ottomans going back to the Battle of Kosovo in the 14th century.
  6. Dóm Square

    – The brick-built square in front of the Votive Church is part of a campus straddling the University’s Quad. It’s an impressive plaza, walled by an arcaded university and ecclesiastical buildings that give it excellent acoustics.
  7. Dömötör Tower

    – The Dömötör Tower has foundations from the 1000s, Romanesque lower floors dating to the 1100s, and Gothic upper floors from the 1200s. The tower was first made for St Demetrius Church but was destroyed. It then belonged to the Üz-Monti Guild, who grew rich by turning it into a luxury hotel in 1760.
  8. City Hall

    – The neo-Baroque monument in yellow on the west flank of Széchenyi Square was the third building to stand at this site. It last existed as a heavily damaged flood prevention structure that the architects Ödön Lechner and Gyula Pártos modified after it had been destroyed.
  9. Széchenyi Square

    – This landscaped five-hectare plaza is lined with mansions, buildings, and monuments like the City Hall and Hotel Tisza. This area in Budapest has been a magnet for writers, composers, and poets for decades.
  10. Klauzál Square

    – Thanks to the renovations done in the 2000s, Szeged was recognized for its award-winning infrastructure which earned it recognition by the European Union for its heritage. This rectangular space is a marvel and houses some of the most expensive houses in this city. Originally built as a form of dense trade, its architecture was influenced by international styles when it was built over 100 years ago.
  11. University Botanical Garden

    – In 1920 the University of Kolozsvar relocated to Szeged and immediately allocated an extensive space on the southern edge of the city for a botanical garden.
  12. Napfényfürdő Aquapolis

    – In a Tisza river, there is an indoor waterpark with slides for kids and adults, along with fitness facilities. There are also thermal treatments available to people of any age – from the youngest to the oldest member of the family!
  13. Szeged Zoo

    – The largest zoo in Hungary is located two and a half kilometers outside of the city center and is designed to help animals in captivity learn how to live like they would in their natural environment. It was opened back in 1989 & has had many important contributions to conservation.
  14. Paprika

    – Capsicum benefits from the high annual sunshine in this southern corner of the country and has a combined paprika and salami museum.
