For a long time, Esch was just a small farming village in the valley of the Uelzecht river. But, in the 1850s important quantities of iron ore were found and mining began, leading to rapid industrialization and population growth. This small town boomed in the early 1900s with the development of mines and the steel industry. Lots of people moved to the village, which is still expanding today due to ARBED’s rapid growth – this company was founded and is headquartered here. Luxembourg’s second economic boom, known as the “steel revolution,” was because of the development of its steel industry, particularly in Luxembourg’s southern region. In the 70s, a lot of steel crises caused mines and many blast furnaces to shut down. The Esch-Belval last blast furnace closed in 1997 and was replaced with an electric furnace that is fed with either scrap metal or recycled metal.

In the industrial wastelands left behind by industrialists, new buildings are being constructed for a cultural and creative town. For instance, there’s Kinepolis and the Rockhal. They’re both great spaces that are vibrant and bustling with creativity.

The area around the old blast furnaces will include different buildings for the University of Luxembourg, various research facilities, and the national archives.
