Beauvais Overview

Located 75 kilometers north of Paris in the Hauts-de-France region, Beauvais is a municipality and prefecture of the Oise département. As of 2016, Beauvais was the most populous city in the Oise department and the third most populous in Picardy.

History

Caesaromagus was the Gallo-Roman name given to Beauvais by the Romans (magos means “field”). Bellovacum was the capital of the Belgic tribe, the Bellovaci, whose Latin rendering is Bellovacum. As a countship in the ninth century, it passed to the bishops of Beauvais in 1013, who became peers of France in the twelfth century. As part of the coronation of kings, the Bishop of Beauvais wore the royal mantle and went with the Bishop of Langres to present the king to the people.

Julius Caesar surrendered to the Bellovaci when he was about 5 Roman miles from Bratuspantium, a fortified town in the land of the Bellovaci. Its name is derived from a Gaulish word meaning “place where judgments are made,” Bratu-expansion. Bratuspantium has been referred to as Beauvais by some. Other theories suggest Vendeuil-Caply or Bailleul sur Thérain.

Odo II, the Count of Blois, was Count of Beauvais from 1004 to 1037.

Angers Saint-Aubin received land from Eudo of Brittany in 1056/1060 (Beauvais, Picardy) (see Albinus of Angers).

The English again besieged the town in 1433, as it had to defend itself in 1346. The siege that it endured in 1472 at the hands of the Duke of Burgundy was famousized by the heroism of the town’s women, led by Jeanne Hachette, who is remembered by a procession on 27 June (the feast of Sainte Angadrême), during which women take precedence over men.

Geography

Beauvais lies on the left bank of the Thérain at its confluence with the Avelon, at the foot of wooded hills. As a result of the destruction of its ancient ramparts, the city is now surrounded by boulevards, and branches of the Thérain run alongside them. Moreover, the northeast of the town has spacious promenades.

Population

54,881 (2015)

Transport

  • Rail transport – Several TER lines serve Gare de Beauvais, which has been open since 1857.
  • Air transport – In Tillé, north of the city, the Beauvais-Tillé Airport dates back to the 1930s.
  • Public transport – In Beauvais, public transportation is provided by Coriolis (formerly Transports Urbains du Beauvaisis or TUB).

Economy

In addition to its tapestry industry, which dates back to 1664, Beauvais manufactures various kinds of cotton and woolen goods, brushes, toys, boots, and shoes, as well as bricks and tiles. Market gardening flourishes in the surrounding area, and the grain and wine trade is extensive.

There is a bishop, a prefect, an Assizes Court in the town, a Chamber of Commerce, a branch of the Bank of France, a higher seminary, a lycée, and training colleges.

Sport

A fine percussion band supports the AS Beauvais Oise football team, which plays in the Championnat National.

Climate

Beauvais has short, comfortable summers and partly cloudy winters. Summers are warm, but winters are cold, windy, and mostly cloudy. Temperatures vary between 33°F and 76°F throughout the year, rarely falling below 22°F or rising above 86°F. Late June to early September is the best time of year to visit Beauvais for warm-weather activities.

What is Beauvais known for?

A government-owned tapestry factory in Beauvais (in Hauts-France) that weaves and repairs tapestries for the French government. There is a vibrant downtown and a prosperous feeling to the town.

Best Things to Do in Beauvais (France)

Beauvais Cathedral

During the 1400s and 1500s, Beauvais Cathedral had dimensions almost beyond belief. The tower rose to 153 meters, making it the tallest building in the world.

Astronomical Clock

The astronomical clock at Beauvais Cathedral will stop you in your tracks. Such watches are ordinary in northern French cathedrals.

Mudo

The Musée de l’Oise is a great place to learn about the Oise department. Among its venues is the former episcopal palace of the Bishops of Beauvais, who had additional powers as both counts and peers of France.

Église Saint-Étienne

The Church of St. Stephen dates back to the early 1100s and is one of the most beloved romanesque buildings north of Paris. Choirs, which were demolished in the 1500s and rebuilt in gothic style, clash with this.

Medieval and Roman Ruins

Below Rue Saint-Pierre lies the Collégiale de Saint-Barthélemy, a church from the 10th century destroyed by bombing during World War II.

Parc Marcel-Dassault

Beauvais’ main green space is on the northern edge of town, and it’s a place that will appeal to even the youngest visitors. A farm with sheep, ponies, chickens, geese, horses, and donkeys surrounds the park.

Galerie Nationale de la Tapisserie

This free museum is located next to the cathedral in the quadrangle, tracing the history of tapestry weaving in Beauvais over three centuries and showing examples from different periods of its history.

Maladrerie Saint-Lazare

The oldest buildings date from the 1100s, and it is easy to identify the three main parts: a barn and sheepfold to the north, a romanesque chapel in the center, and plague remain to the south.

Château de Troissereux

This is the best part, as there is a greenhouse with 45 varieties of trees (many of which were planted in the 1700s), a 330-meter canal, and birds such as herons, swans, geese, and kingfishers.

Local Walks and Bike Rides

Beauvais is located in a small historical region called the “Pays Beauvais.” A green lung of the Oise is often called the “poumon vert de l’Oise” (green lung of the Oise) or the “green escape.” At the confluence of the Thérain and Avelon Rivers, both tributaries of the Oise, the Beauvais countryside is abundant with water.
