Rueil-Malmaison was known initially as Rueil. A medieval spelling of the name Rueil would be Roialum, Riogilum, Rotoialum, Ruolium, or Ruellium. This name is derived from the Celtic word ialo (meaning ‘clearing, glade’ or ‘place of’) suffixed with a radical meaning ‘brook, stream’ (Latin: rivers, Old French: rû), or perhaps to an extreme sense ‘ford’ (Celtic Ritu).
The commune was renamed Rueil-Malmaison after Napoleon’s first wife, Joséphine de Beauharnais, who lived in Malmaison.
Malmaison derives from the Medieval Latin mala mansion, which means ‘ill-fated domain,’ ‘bad luck estate.’ The Vikings destroyed Malmaison in 846 when it was a royal residence during the Early Middle Ages.
Built in 1756 by Axel Guillaumot as a Swiss Guard barracks, the Rueil barracks have been classified Monument historique since 1973. During the French Revolution, Louis XIII massacred the Guard at the Tuileries on 10 August 1792.
Napoleon lived with his first wife, Joséphine de Beauharnais, in the Château de Malmaison in Rueil. The nearby Saint-Pierre-Saint-Paul church in the city’s center buried her upon her death in 1814.
At the time of the Franco-Prussian War of 1870, Rueil was on the front line.
Claude Monet, Édouard Manet, and Pierre-Auguste Renoir painted the Seine River that crossed the town at the end of the 19th century.

The banker’s daughter would not sell, and Joséphine would not get the property until the neighbor drowned in the pond in 1808.
