Venlo Overview
Venlo is a Dutch city near the German border in the southeast. Modern art is showcased at the Museum van Bommel van Dam in the city center. Stone Age relics and art from around the region can be found in the Limburgs Museum nearby. There is a sculpted baroque pulpit in Sint Martinuskerk, a Gothic church. The Renaissance-style Stadhuis (Town Hall) overlooks the bustling Markt square and survived WWII air raids.
Early History
A Roman and Celtic coin was found in Venlo; it was speculated that it was Sablones, a settlement on the Roman road connecting Maastricht with Xanten. However, the little evidence regarding Sablones’ location contradicts this thought, and there is no evidence supporting it. Blariacum was the name of Blerick, located on the west bank.
Venlo became an important trading post in the Meuse-Rhine area in the 9th century, received city rights in 1343, and became a Hanseatic League member in 1375.
Venlo was besieged several times because of its strategic importance, and Menno van Coehoorn’s siege of 1702 was the most significant. As a result, Venlo became part of the Generaliteitslanden of the United Provinces at the Treaty of 1713. In the aftermath of the Napoleonic Wars, it became part of the United Kingdom of the Netherlands.
Venlo was surrounded by German Confederation territory in 1839-1866.

With a population of more than 100,000, Venlo has a large number of schools, both primary and secondary. Moreover, Venlo has several institutes of higher education within the southern Netherlands.
Transport
Within one hour of Venlo, two motorways connect to Düsseldorf, Duisburg, Cologne, and the Ruhr region (Bundesautobahn 40 and Bundesautobahn 61).
A junction station is Venlo railway station. The airport provides regular connections to Eindhoven, Roermond, and Nijmegen in the Netherlands. In addition, it serves Düsseldorf and Hamm via Kaldenkirchen, Viersen, and Mönchengladbach (the first stop in Germany).
Sports
The VVV-Venlo football club has played in the De Koel Stadium for over a century. A professional football club in the Netherlands since 1903, it was founded on 7 February 1903. In recent years, it has been a yo-yo club, winning the Eerste Divisie in 2009 and 2017 and being promoted to the Eredivisie.
Geography
Vienna is located in northeastern Austria, at the easternmost extension of the Alps in the Vienna Basin.
