Geography
Vénissieux is located on the outskirts of Lyon to the south.
Toponymy
A Roman villa landlord named Vinicius inspired the name Vénissieux, derived from Latin Viniciacum. ‘Vénissians’ are the people who live there.
History
During World War II, Vénissieux was part of Nazi-occupied France. As part of the Allied bombing campaign in May 1944, the Allies targeted the German-controlled factories in the Berliet area. The Allies liberated Vénissieux on September 2, 1944.
Les Minguettes neighborhood in Vénissieux was the scene of some of the first riots in suburban neighborhoods in France in September 1981. Les Minguettes experienced riots again in 1983, attracting significant media attention and marking the first time cars were burned as a protest in France. There was a wave of racist crimes in France, especially against African immigrants from the Maghreb, mainly former French Algerian colonies (independent Algeria since 1962). Les Minguettes’ young people and police had a violent confrontation on March 21, 1983, during a police raid. The hunger strike began as a protest against police intimidation. A police officer seriously injured the young president of the association SOS Avenir Minguettes during a police raid on June 21, 1983. To reduce tensions between police and the youth of Les Minguettes, the idea of a nonviolent march emerged. Inspired by Reverend Martin Luther King Jr.’s demonstrations calling for the end of segregation in the United States and Mahatma Gandhi’s march for Indian independence from the United Kingdom, priest Christian Delorme, and pastor Jean Costil organized an extended, nonviolent march. Among their demands were equal rights, an end to injustice, and an end to social inequality. Through the remainder of 1983, a series of events occurred throughout France for the March for Equality and Against Racism.
Transport
There are two boulevards in the city. Three exits overlook the town from the Lyon ring road: the Parilly exit, the Vénissieux exit, and the Moulin à Vent exit. These exits can be reached from the south of the town by the southern urban boulevard and from the north by the Lyon ring road. In addition, the TCL network provides a wide range of transportation options to the city. Two lines D of the Lyon metro are located on its territory: Parc de Parilly, the Railway Station of Vénissieux, and the Lyon tramway line T4 and three bus lines. There are rail connections between Vénissieux station and Lyon and Saint-André-le-Gaz.
