In the southern French region of Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur, Aix-en-Provence is a university city. Cézanne was born here, where he developed his Post-Impressionist style. A walking trail connects his childhood home, Jas de Bouffan, with his former studio, Atelier Cézanne. A frequent subject of his paintings was the white limestone mountain Sainte-Victoire overlooking the city and the surrounding countryside.
The Roman consul Sextius Calvinus founded Aix (Aquae Sextiae) in 123 BC following the destruction of the nearby Gallic oppidum at Entremont. His springs were named Aquae Sextiae. In 102 BC, its vicinity hosted the Battle of Aquae Sextiae, where the Romans under Gaius Marius defeated the Ambrones and Teutones, with a mass suicide among the captured women that became a Roman legend of Germanic heroism.
By the 4th century A.D., it had become the metropolis of Narbonensis Secunda. In 477, it was occupied by the Visigoths. During the following century, the town was repeatedly plundered by the Franks and Lombards and occupied by the Saracens in 731 and Charles Martel in 737. Under the houses of Barcelona/Aragon and Anjou, Aix became a learning center and an artistic center during the Middle Ages, when it was the capital of Provence.
With the rest of Provence, Aix became part of France in 1487, and Louis XII founded the parliament of Provence there in 1501, which lasted until 1789. It served as the seat of the Intendance of Provence during the 17th and 18th centuries. The remains of a Roman amphitheater were discovered during archaeological excavations in the Ville des Tours, a medieval suburb of Aix. There is a legend about a Christian dragon based on fossil bones found in the Upper Continental Miocene.

Aix-en-Provence is located in the south of France, on a plain overlooking the Arc river, about 1.5 kilometers from its right bank. It slopes gently from north to south, and the Montagne Sainte-Victoire can be seen to the east. Aix’s location in the south of France results in a warm climate, but it is more extreme than Marseille because of its inland location. There is an average temperature of 6°C (43°F) in January and 24°C (75°F) in July. On average, there are 300 days of sunshine and only 91 days of rain each year. Although Aix is partially protected from the Mistral, it sometimes experiences more excellent and gustier conditions.
The city of Aix has been a university town since Louis II of Anjou granted a charter for a university in 1409. With many teaching and research institutes, Aix-en-Provence remains an important educational center.
Several training colleges, lycées, and an art and design college are also located in Aix. In addition, it has become a center for many international study programs.
Former industries included flour-milling, confectionery, iron-ware production, hat, the match manufacture, and olive oil extraction.
The city of Aix is one of the most popular retirement destinations in Southern France among Americans. Besides the French, other Europeans are attracted to the city’s vibrant lifestyle, great weather, and cultural scene. Due to this, Aix-en-Provence is a slightly more expensive retirement destination than other southern locations.
One of the country’s best conservatoires (music schools) is located in Aix, which is known for its musical heritage. Musique dans la Rue, an eight-day festival of free concerts, and the annual free opera concert on Cours Mirabeau are also famous.

This cathedral was built over a long period from the 5th to the 17th century, making it a unique monument. There are elements of Romanesque, Gothic, and Romanesque architecture on the facade.
Located in the former Priory of Malta near the Cours Mirabeau, the Granet Museum is considered one of France’s finest art museums.
A collection of tapestries from the 17th and 18th centuries is displayed here, along with contemporary textile art. The museum’s collection includes nine tapestries from the Royal Manufactory of Beauvais featuring scenes from Don Quixote de la Mancha by Cervantes.
Visitors to the atelier of Paul Cézanne will enjoy seeing where his creativity was born. The artist spent a great deal of time and energy at this studio throughout the year. Painting en plein air (outdoors) was his favorite activity on sunny days.
Visitors can view 44 wall paintings, “integrations murales,” and hundreds of sketches by Hungarian-French artist Victor Vasarely, who was part of the Abstract Constructivist movement.
Built for Louis de Mercoeur, Duke of Vendôme, this elegant 18th-century residence is located in a verdant setting close to the city’s historic center, known as one of the most charming “follies” (pleasure houses) of the Grand Siècle (the 17th century).
