Albi is located northeast of Toulouse along the Tarn River in southern France. St. Cécile Cathedral, a 13th-century red-brick Gothic landmark with interior frescoes such as “Last Judgment,” dominates the skyline. The Palais de la Berbie houses the Musée Toulouse-Lautrec, dedicated to the Albi-born painter. A former convent now houses the Fashion Museum, which displays costumes from the 18th and 20th centuries.
Humans settled Albi in the Bronze Age (3000 to 600 BC). The town became Civitas Albigensium, the Albigeois, Albiga territory, after the Roman conquest of Gaul in 51 B.C. Despite archaeological digs, no Roman buildings have been found, suggesting Albi was a modest Roman settlement.
A majority of the townspeople died of plague in 584, according to Gregory of Tours.
In 1040, Albi expanded and built the Pont Vieux (Old Bridge). There was considerable growth in the urban area, as evidenced by the construction of new quarters. The city grew rich at this time through trade and commercial exchanges and the tolls charged to travelers for crossing the Pont Vieux.
As the dominant Catholic Church regarded ascetic Christian dualism as a dangerous heresy, the Pope and French king joined forces in 1208 to combat the Cathars. It was a time of severe repression, with many Cathars being burned at stake across the region. A virtually independent area, which had been almost independent until then, was subsequently annexed by the French.
Bishop Bernard de Castanet finished work on the Palais de la Berbie in the late 13th century after the Albigensian Crusade against the Cathars’ upheaval. The Sainte-Cécile cathedral was built by him starting in 1282. It was primarily thanks to the cultivation of Isatis Tinctoria, commonly called woad, that the town enjoyed a period of commercial prosperity. The pastel merchants amassed vast fortunes during the Renaissance, as evidenced by the fine houses they built.
Albi and Toulouse are connected by the A68 (and Lyon by the N 88, which will eventually become a motorway).
On the line from Toulouse to Rodez, Albi is served by two railway stations:
Albi experiences a humid subtropical climate (Köppen classification Cfa) bordering an oceanic climate (Cfb). Most areas of similar classification have milder winters and warmer summers, like southwestern France. As a result of its substantial summer rainfall, the climate cannot be classified as Mediterranean.
49,475 (2015).
Albi has an elite high school in an old monastery, Lycée Lapérouse, which has 500 students.
This bustling town of around 50,000 inhabitants is worth a visit if you’re on vacation in the south of France. The gothic style Sainte Cécile cathedral towers over this attractive red brick city with dramatic views of the Tern River.
Built after the Albigensian Crusade that crushed the Cathar sect, this hulking cathedral was erected in the 13th century. The building was designed to convey the Catholic church’s authority, and it still does so successfully
Within Albi’s medieval Palace de la Berbie (episcopal Palace), the museum is home to the most extensive collection of Toulouse-Lautrec’s work worldwide.
From the terrace high above the water, you can admire the immense cathedral and its outer structures in all their splendor. It is also possible to gaze across the Tarn at the northern districts of Albi and the beautiful bridges that span the river.
One of France’s oldest bridges, Pont Vieux is still in use today. The bridge is also part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site that encompasses the cathedral complex.
Albi’s old quarter is a central attraction, with three different routes to explore it. The center has six distinct neighborhoods, each with a particular character.
Though shadowed by its near neighbor, the cathedral, this magnificent church is also worth a visit and is part of the World Heritage Site. Work was halted during the Albigensian Crusade, making the architecture very composite.
Its location alone warrants your attention, as it is housed in what used to be the Convent of the Annunciation. Traces date back to the 12th century, with painted ceilings, spiral staircases, and carved wooden doors.
This museum is housed in Albi’s former pasta-making mills, which date back to the 1850s but have been converted into a 1600s-era building. The museum has many nautical artifacts, including paintings, uniforms, maps, navigational instruments, weapons, and compelling finds from Lapérouse’s shipwreck.
One of the three loops devised by Albi’s tourist office will send you off on a short tour of the Tarn’s riverbanks. You will never forget the view of the Cathedral and Palais de la Berbie across the river.
Since 1989, artists have created works specifically for display in this atmospheric industrial space. The museum doesn’t have a permanent exhibition, but there are workshops, talks, and temporary exhibits, so you might be surprised by what you find.
