Alkmaar Overview
The city and municipality of Alkmaar are located in the province of North Holland, about 30 kilometers north of Amsterdam. Cheese markets are well known in Alkmaar, and this is one of the most popular cultural destinations for tourists. In 2021, there were 109,896 residents living in the municipality.
History
Alkmaar first appears in a document from the 10th century. Twelve years after the village became a town, city rights were granted in 1254. During medieval times, Alkmaar was protected from flooding by an ancient sand bank a couple of meters above the surrounding area. Some of the oldest polders in the world can be found in its vicinity. There are older spellings of this name, such as Alckmar.
Five Franciscans from Alkmaar were hanged in Enkhuizen on June 24, 1572, after the Geuzen captured Alkmaar (martyrs of Alkmaar).
During the siege of 1573, Spanish forces led by Don Fadrique, son of the Duke of Alva, occupied the city. Despite the protestations of the peasantry, who feared for their harvest, the Prince of Orange opened the floodgates of the dykes and flooded the region if the need arose, despite their urgent pleas for help.
With the waters rising, the Spaniards raised the siege and fled because some of his dispatches fell into Don Fadrique’s hands. Bij Alkmaar begins de victoria (“Victory begins at Alkmaar”) refers to this turning point in the Eighty Years War. On October 8, the anniversary of the end of the siege, Alkmaar still celebrates the event.
It was captured in 1799 by an Anglo-Russian expeditionary force during the French Revolutionary Wars but ultimately defeated by the French at the Battle of Castricum. A Convention of Alkmaar was held on October 18, 1799, to determine the fate of the defeated Anglo-Russian force after that battle. “Alkmaer” was the name of the Arc de Triomphe in Paris that commemorated the French victory.
Through Alkmaar was dug the North Holland Canal, which opened in 1824. Railways were built between Alkmaar and Den Helder in 1865 and between Alkmaar and Haarlem in 1867.
Climate
Alkmaar has comfortable summers, long, cold winters, and is windy and partly cloudy year-round. The temperature typically ranges between 35°F and 69°F and rarely falls below 25°F or rises above 77°F throughout the year. Late June to early September is the best time to visit Alkmaar if you’re looking for warm-weather activities.
Administrative divisions
A chronological list of cities, towns, villages, and districts that make up Alkmaar and its neighboring municipalities are as follows: Alkmaar, Bergermeer, Daalmeer, De Hoef, De Horn, De Nollen, Het Rak, Huiswaard, Koedijk (southeastern part), Overdie, Oudorp, and Omval. Graft-De Rijp and Schermer were merged into Alkmaar on January 1, 2015. Alkmaar has thus since then included the historical village of De Rijp.

From Amsterdam to Alkmaar, the A9 motorway continues as the N9 into Den Helder.

Alkmaar is home to the professional soccer team AZ (Alkmaar Zaanstreek). AFAS Stadion replaced the former DSB Stadion in 2006, which had a capacity of 17,000 people. AZ won the Dutch football league Eredivisie in 2008-2009. After the Eredivisie in 1980/81, the club won its second league title with only one defeat. Coaches such as Ronald Koeman, former coach of F.C. Barcelona, and Louis van Gaal, coach of the Netherlands national football team, are notable.
Dutch national track cycling championships are also held yearly at the city’s velodrome. European Road Championships were held in the town in 2019.
