Almere Overview
Almere, a city in Flevoland, is filled with plans and natural beauty. That’s why it’s been chosen by European cities to be part of the 8 pilot cities for the EU Smart Cities Initiative. Almere is a municipality in Flevoland and comprises six official areas.
History
After WWII, the Dutch government prioritized housing their population and founded two new towns in the IJsselmeerpolders, Oostelijk Flevoland and Zuid. The plans for agriculture were postponed to create those towns. Oostelijk Flevoland was renamed Lelystad in 1971 and is now the largest town in the Flevoland province. The first sketches for South West City dated back to the 1970s, but due to new planning law, it became one part of Almere. Almere is the first town in the Netherlands to become a municipality in 1984. At that time Almere was still controlled by the Openbaar Lichaam Zuidelijke IJsselmeerpolders, which was also responsible for local government and managing land. Almere was originally envisioned as a town with multiple centers. This idea later turned out to be unpopular and neighborhoods like Tussen de Vaarten were allowed to become built. Differences in house-building between the oldest and newest areas can also be seen. The housing plan in Almere in the 1970s followed a basic functionality model and a leveling of social status. However, starting in the 1990s more “exclusive homes” that had striking designs began to be built (notably in the Regenboogbuurt).
Local executive
Ank Bijleveld has been serving as the acting mayor of Almere since 17 January 2022. Following the Dutch municipal elections, in 2014 and after serving as a city council member for a year, she was appointed to her current position by the winning party – ACM. The local elections were a success for the nationalist party, but they did not join the new coalition. It was considered a big victory as they also received a plurality in these elections. However, some controversial statements by their leader Geert Wilders stirred some controversy before the results were published.
Geography
Almere is in the polder of Southern Flevoland (Dutch: Zuidelijk Flevoland). It is the most western municipality of the province of Flevoland. It borders Markermeer in the west, north, and east, as well as Lelystad, Zeewolde, and mainland Holland respectively.
Climate
In Almere, summers are warm and the weather is mostly cloudy. Winters can be cold and long due to the cold winds. The weather in Almere Stad is quite different and the best time of year to visit is June – September. Temperatures rarely stay around those specified temperatures and there’s a good chance that you’ll freeze during colder months.

Transport
The traffic infrastructure in Almere is unique because it is made up of separate infrastructure for cycles, cars, and buses. Each has a separate cycle path in most parts of the city, but the buses usually drive on a bus lane. Almere is connected to the motorways.
Railway
In 1987, there were two train stations in Almere, NS, and Lelystad Centrum. The Flevolijn was completed in 1989 and connected Weesp to Lelystad through a fully completed line.
