History

Hunter-gatherers from the Mesolithic period started camps in the Amersfoort region, near cities like it. Researchers have found remains of these camps, including hearths and flint objects left behind, north of Amersfoort.

Early years

Remains of settlements in the Amersfoort area from around 1000 BC had been found. The name “Amersfoort,” after a ford called the Eem, did not appear until the 11th century. The city grew around what is now known as the central square, The Hof. It was granted city rights in 1259 by the Bishop of Utrecht, Henry I van Vian. Construction of the first defensive wall began around 1300 and was completed around 1380. There are a lot of historic buildings that are still standing in the city of Ghent, and the famous Koppelpoort is among them. It’s part of a second wall that was demolished, and now houses stand on it. The first wall to has been demolished and replaced by new homes. Today’s Muurhuizen (wall houses) Street sits on top of the remains of the original city wall foundation. The bricks are still intact and reused for construction, which adds life to the street.

Sports

Amersfoort had its professional football (soccer) club named HVC. It was founded on 30 July 1973 but disbanded on 30 June 1982 because of financial problems. The city also hosted the riding part of the modern pentathlon event for the Olympics in 1920, 1932, and 1960. Amersfoort, Netherlands also hosted the Dutch Open (tennis) tournament from 2002 till its end in 2008.

The city is also home to the Amersfoort club, which uses the highest-level baseball league in the Netherlands. The men’s baseball team plays in Honkbals Hoofdklasse and will fight for a spot in the 2020 World Baseball Classic.

15 Best Things to Do in Amersfoort (the Netherlands)

  1. Koppelpoort

    – The Koppelpoort is a gorgeous structure consisting of a water gate and, as you can guess, a road gate. It’s one of the most beautiful examples of these combined gates in the Netherlands. The gate is dated back to the Middle Ages, which means it was originally part of the outer city wall before being completed in 1427. The Koppelpoort is a central structure that spans the canal and offers passage for smaller boats. It is impressive but was never breached.
  2. Amersfoort Zoo

    – One of the best zoos in the Netherlands has come from a small complex that only had a few animals. You’re sure to find something appealing at this zoo, featuring over 150 wild animals! There are Tigers, Snakes, and Lions among other things. Flamingos, Cheetahs, Goats, and Elephants Rani and Indra live inside a wonderfully maintained enclosure.
  3. Onze-Lieve Vrouwetoren

    – Also known as the Church of Our Lady, Onze-Lieve Vrouwetoren is an enormous church tower designed in a Late Gothic style. It stands over 98 meters (330 feet) tall and is the third tallest in the Netherlands.
  4. Hof

    – As far as town squares go, the Hof is a truly monumental one. Located right in the center of the old town, near Sint Joriskerk. Here you will find many shops and cafes and restaurants with outdoor seating areas where you can take time to rest your feet.
  5. Dutch Cavalry Museum

    – The Dutch Cavalry Museum is a unique timepiece that takes visitors back in time. Its old barrack buildings are located on the outskirts of Amersfoort and it’s not far from the Belgenmonument, which covers 450 years’ worth of military history. Wow! This museum looks great and its collection reminds us of the exploits of our army.
  6. Oude Haven

    – The Oude Haven is a charming stretch of canal, located in Amersfoort near the Hof and S. You can’t find a more beautifully created waterway in Amersfoort than this one.
  7. Sint Joriskerk

    – Standing proudly in the center of Amersfoort, Sint Joriskerk is one of the many strange church designs you’ll see across Europe. Constructed in the 1200s when Amersfoort gained city rights, the church has been beautifully restored in modern times.

  10. Walk the length of the Muurhuizen

    – Amersfoort has a lot to offer, including its old town center which is designed like a giant ring. There are also many sights in Amersfoort you can see on foot, up close, and from many different angles. One such street is the Muurhuizen. It winds down south of the old town and then around back up north. At the crossroads of Nieuwe Gracht, Breestaraat, and Langegracht it starts again.
  11. Amersfoort Canals

  13. Museum Flehite

    – Amersfoort’s history plays a big part in the museum’s content. The city has been around for centuries and has developed quite a lot over time. Visiting this museum gives you an insight into the past of the region, which is full of art exhibitions from such artists as Rik Wouters.
