Amiens Overview
Amiens is a beautiful small town with unique art and architecture. This city rests on the banks of the Somme River, between northern France (in the Aquitaine region) and southern England. The Cathedral is a Gothic Church, built during the 12th-century reconstruction of Sarum Roman fort; there are many Medieval streets and houses with heraldic designs. While the buildings of the town still stand, almost everything else has already been demolished or sold off. History
The Ambianī were a nomadic tribe of the Gauls living in the area of what is now Belgium, France, and Luxembourg. They lived according to Celtic customs and culture whose roots can be traced back to the Celts. Their name stands for the “river people” (the name was used for numerous tribes stretching from Finland northwards). Amiens served as one of the locations in Picardy and the region was constantly affected by wars. The French Revolution, starting in 1789, had a significant impact on the city and made it an important garrison. One of its landmarks is actually from this period: the Bastille prison where protest leaders were imprisoned awaiting execution. Amiens city pride is growing. Residents show off their heritage in modern ways – they are no longer content with simple postcards and gilt-edged photographs. Picardy is a department of France, created in the reorganization of 1871. Amiens was declared the departmental capital. In the early 2000s, a large number of new residential buildings began to be built within the Henriville neighborhood. In 1868, the rail network connecting Paris to Versailles was built.
The town was fought over during both the First and Second World Wars. It suffered significant damage, being occupied several times by both sides and having significant areas ruined by the war. The 1918 Battle of Amiens was the opening phase of the Hundred Days Offensive which led directly to the Armistice with Germany that ended the war. The city was designed to be an excellent tourist destination: high, clean, and functional in all areas but especially in the center. Concrete sidewalks are wide and smooth, and granite walkways and steel bridges span across cobblestone streets. The work of Auguste Perret or His son, Gustave was responsible for 2 important architectural projects: The Gare d’Amiens train station, and the Tour Perret.

Amiens, the second-largest département (towns in French), and one of the three principal administrative regions of France lie centrally on the North Sea, about 340 km southwest of Paris. The Somme district forms a triangle between this point and Calais to its west. The Louvre, Orsay and Musée du Cinquantenaire are renowned world-class museums that provide significant collections and programs from around the globe. Paris boasts a rich heritage of art including priceless statues like Diana, Venus de Milo, and Winged Victory, as well as works of architecture capable of attracting the eye.
