Angers Overview
At the edge of the Loire Valley, Angers is a city in western France beside the Maine river. Founded in the middle ages by the Plantagenet dynasty, it has a charming old town with half-timbered houses like Maison d’Adam (now Maison des Artisans). With its twin 75m spires and elaborate stained-glass rose windows, the Cathédrale St-Maurice dominates the central Place Sainte-Croix. There is a thriving cafe culture in the city’s newer areas.
Etymology
In his Geography, Ptolemy mentions the city for the first time around 150 AD. At that time, it was known as Juliomagus (Greek, Iouliomagos), a name also used in the Tabula Peutingeriana. A compound of the Latin name Julius (probably about Julius Caesar) and the Celtic word magos, “market.” It was common for towns in Roman Gaul to be dedicated in this way, and toponyms were often Gallic in origin.
Nicknames
Angers was traditionally known as the “Black City” (la Ville Noire) because of the slate quarry in neighboring Trélazé.
Location
Angers is located on the road connecting Paris to the Atlantic Ocean, at the geographical center of Maine-et-Loire. It is located just south of the Loir, Mayenne, and Sarthe confluence, which form the Maine river. Angers are crossed by Maine, which flows southward towards the Loire. Natural crossroads formed by the intersection of the three rivers and the nearby Loire resulted in the foundation of the ancient Juliomagus.
Nantes is 91 km (57 mi) away, Rennes is 124 km (77 mi) away, Poitiers is 132 km (82 mi) away, and Paris is 297 km (185 mi) away. Additionally, it is 118 km (73 mi) away from Pornic, the closest sea resort on the Atlantic coast.
Climate
Angers experience moderate rain throughout the year due to their oceanic climate. There are few frosts or snowfalls in winter, and it is warm and sunny in summer.
History
Angers have been inhabited since around 400,000 BC. In the Neolithic period, there were more vestiges, including polished stone axes. Burials were also discovered on the castle grounds dating back to 4500 and 3500 BC.
A Celtic people called the Andecavi settled north of the Loire during the 5th century B.C. Angers was a relatively densely populated hillfort by the end of the Iron Age. Despite Juliomagus’ Roman name being older than the settlement, it is only attested from the 3rd century. A theater and a Mithraeum were part of the Roman town, which included villas and baths.
The Germanic invasions of AD 275 and 276 forced the city’s inhabitants to build a wall around a small area of 9 hectares (22 acres).
A new bishop was elected for Angers during the election of Martin of Tours in 372. The first abbey was built to house Saint Albinius’ sarcophagus during the seventh century. A century later, the Merovingian kings Clovis II and Theuderic III founded Saint-Serge Abbey. During the construction of the tramway, ten Frankish sarcophagi were discovered where Saint-Morille church once stood.
Due to its location on the border with Brittany and Normandy, Angers suffered from its position in the 850s. A Breton chief and Charles the Bald signed the Treaty of Angers in the town in September 851, which secured Breton independence and fixed Brittany’s borders. In 853, Charles the Bald created a wide buffer zone around Brittany consisting of parts of Anjou, Touraine, Maine, and Sées, ruled by Robert the Strong, Hugh Capet’s great-grandfather.
Demographics
In 2017, Angers had 152,960 residents, an increase of 1.2% from ten years earlier. In France, it is the 18th most populated commune. Angers plus eleven surrounding communes (243.3 square kilometers (93.9 square miles) in total) comprised the urban area (unité urbaine) in 2018, which had 242,613 inhabitants. Eighty-one communes, 432,939 people, and 2,419 square kilometers made up the metropolitan area (aire attraction) in 2018. Angers Loire Métropole, an economic and political association of communes, has 29 communes and 299,000 residents.
The population of Angers is relatively young, with 46% of residents more youthful than 30 and 22% older than 60. As a result of the presence of two universities, 21.0% of the population between 15 and 64 were students and pupils in 2017.
Economy
Angers’ early prosperity was primarily due to the nearby slate quarries, which provided the material for its roofs, earning the town the nickname “Black City.” Manufacturing in the mid-19th century concentrated on goods for sailing ships (sailcloth and rope), linen and hose, sugar, leather, wax, and oil, as well as agricultural products (mainly wheat, wine, and fruit). Cointreau had developed the distillation of liqueurs from the area’s fruit to an industrial scale by the time of the First World War. Despite steamships significantly reducing demand, sailing ships continued to be built. Rather than producing cables, wires, and thread, local companies increased the production of footwear, umbrellas, and parasols. There were several sparkling wine vineyards in the area, and fruit was increasingly preserved for sale elsewhere. Also, a small-scale textile industry and the production of machines began in the area, as well as the production of hemp and flowers on a commercial scale.
Health
One of the oldest hospitals in France, the Hôtel-Dieu was founded in the 12th century. Centre Hospitalier Universitaire (CHU) was founded in 1966 in new buildings, located initially at Hospice Saint-Jean. The hospital has 1,500 beds and around 5,500 employees. In addition, two private hospitals and a reeducation center are located in the region.
Transport
Angers is located at the crossroads of three highways, the A11 to Paris and Nantes, the A87 to La Roche-sur-Yon, and the A85 to Tours and Lyon. The city is connected to Rennes, Caen, and Laval by national roads.
On 25 June 2011, Angers inaugurated its new Irigo tram system. With 25 stops, the tramway has one line of 12 kilometers (7.46 miles).
A bus station outside the Angers Saint-Laud train station serves the departmental bus network (Anjoubus) and international bus companies.
Several train stations are located throughout the city, initially built in the 19th century. Some are still in use, while others are closed or reserved for freight.
There is an airport near Saint-Aubin island, which was replaced in 1998 by Angers – Loire Airport.
Sport
Many sports teams play at the highest level in Angers. There is a football team in Angers called Angers SCO. After 21 years away from Ligue 1 (the top French league), the club returned in 2015. Angers’ ice hockey team is Les Ducs d’Angers. In the first division, the club plays in the Magnus League. The Anjou BC basketball team plays in the second division in Angers. Table tennis has been played in France’s top division Pro A since 2000–2001 by Vaillante Angers. Additionally, Angers is home to the Angers Aviron Nautique, a rowing club competing in France’s regattas.
