Location
Anglet commune is part of the urban area of Bayonne-Anglet-Biarritz (B.A.B.), located south of the city and within the Labor province of the Basque country. Ten percent of the commune is covered with pine forests, including those of Pignada, Lazaretto, and Chiberta. At the Pointe de Grave, on the shore of the Gironde estuary, the sandy coast begins 200 km north and ends in Anglet. Numerous seawalls are cutting the shoreline. Anglet’s public maritime domain has been updated, and a coastal reserve forty meters wide (130 feet) has been established since 1978. As a result of its many bays and inlets, this area is a valuable laboratory for studying coastal erosion monitoring techniques.
Toponymy
Anglet comes from the Latin angulus, “Land shaped like a wedge” or “low terrain or depression.” Jean-Baptiste Orpustan confirmed this last hypothesis, stating that both the official and basque names are derived from two distinct strains of the exact origin: angellu, a diminutive of Angulu. According to Michelena, “low terrain” encompasses all the sandy beaches in the commune.”
Prehistory
Anglet’s oldest land dates back to prehistory (mid-Paleolithic) and Mousterian culture (between 100,000 and 35,000 BC). There have been numerous discoveries of Mousterian flint tools. It is possible to work on skins and make wooden axes with wooden handles by creating sharp points with splinters on both faces (scratcher, scraper). In other parts of the Basque Country (Saint-Pierre-d’Irube, Ilbarritz at Bidart, Duboscoa at Villefranche, Lahonce, Urt, and Bidache), open-air locations were preferred around Anglet, including the Tower of Lannes, Brindos, and In Sutar.
An order for the following sites was issued by the prefecture of the Aquitaine region based on the knowledge elements of the archaeological heritage of the commune identified by the Regional Directorate of Cultural Affairs of Aquitaine in its archaeological database: Brindos, Cote 50, La Ballastière of Micoteau (Sutar), and Hondritz. The Rue du Colombier and the Tower of Lannes are considered prehistoric refuges, referring to protohistoric occupations (Copper Age, Bronze Age, Iron Age)
Economy
Once dominated by agriculture (the town is part of the A.O.C. Ossau-Iraty zone designation), Anglet now has a broader economic scope because it is part of the Bayonne-Anglet-Biarritz urban area.

Anglet is part of the Port of Bayonne, which also encompasses Bayonne and Boucau in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques and Tarnos in the Landes.

Languages
Anglet and its neighboring communes of Biarritz and Bayonne can be viewed as either Gascon or Basque, depending on the time and point of view. Based on the Linguistic Atlas of Gascony (A.L.G.) (1954-1966) and Lucien Bonaparte’s investigations on the limits of the Basque language in 1863, most people in this area spoke Gascon. In addition, some areas could be described as Basque (no doubt because of Basque campaigns). French has been the majority language since the 20th century.
