In the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region of southwestern France, Angoulême is a commune and the prefecture of the Charente department. Angoumoisins or Angoumoisines are the residents of the commune. The city is nicknamed “the balcony of the southwest” because it sits on a plateau overlooking a meander of the Charente.
As the capital of Angoulême in the Ancien Régime, Angoulême was fortified for a long time and was highly coveted due to its position at the intersection of many important routes for communication, so it suffered many sieges. As a result of its turbulent past, the city, perched on a rocky spur, inherited a significant historical, religious, and urban heritage.
The city of Angoulême lies on a hill overlooking a loop of the Charente, which is limited in an area downstream by the Anguienne and upstream by the Touvre.
The climate of Angoulême is similar to that of Cognac, the city where the departmental weather station is located. There is a slight tendency to dry during summer, but precipitation is modest throughout the year.
Before the Roman period, the city had little known history: it is known that the plateau was occupied by an oppidum, traces of which were discovered in the Saint-Martial cemetery under the name Iculisma. The currency of the country was the Lemovice.
The poet Ausonius considered the town small because it was not located on any major roads. While no Roman monuments have been found, it benefited from the Pax Romana and trade on the river. There was a prosperous time in the town during the Roman Empire. The rocky promontory commanded a strategic position at 80 meters (260 feet) above the Charente and 60 meters (200 feet) above the Anguienne. During the end of the Roman Empire, it became the capital of a civitas (at the end of the 3rd or 4th centuries). It was maintained until the 13th century that the Bas-Empire rampart surrounded 27 hectares of land. Bordeaux, Saintes, Poitiers, Limoges, and Périgueux were connected to the town via the Roman road network.
Many years passed before Haut-Empire became known. Recent excavations have revealed the Roman city’s power. Water table levels were very high in early times, as evidenced by a well dug in the earlier eras. The courthouse has a large thermal spa complex usually related to water supply through an aqueduct.
In the 3rd century, Saint Ausone of Angoulême became the first bishop of Angoulême. The establishment of a County in the 6th century, under the guidance of Turpion (or Turpin) (839–863), greatly enhanced the administrative importance of the city. However, the town was permanently attached to the various kingdoms of Aquitaine and was linked to the Frankish kingdom when Pepin the Short defeated Hunald II in 768. Archaeologists discovered a prehistoric stone with engravings of horses and other animals near Angoulême station in June 2019. Around 12,000 years old, the Palaeolithic stone plate is believed to be.
As of January 2018, the population of Angoulême was 41,711, making it the most populous city in Charente. Having a communal area of 2,185 hectares, the population density is 1,909 inhabitants per km2, which makes it the most densely populated municipality in Charente.
There were 41,740 people in Angoulême in 2017, a 13% decrease from 1962 when it had its highest population and a 2.2% decline from 2007.
Angoulême is a center for papermaking and printing, with a history dating back to the 14th century. Due in part to the river Touvre, which joins the Charente at Angoulême, papermaking is favored due to the uniform temperature and volume of the water year-round. Following the Sorgue (Fontaine-de-Vaucluse), the Touvre is France’s second-largest underground river.
It emerges as a full-blown river from Ruelle at the head of the valley. The water source is a trout fishery, and Angoulême’s drinking water comes from a pumping station. Many paper mills in the neighborhood of the town are situated on the banks of watercourses. There has been a large production of cardboard for packaging and fine vellum for correspondence.
Despite its hilly terrain, there are lots of things to see and do in the upper town of Angouleme. There is more to offer tourists here than in the lower part of the city, and elegant squares, tinkling fountains, and grand buildings are all found here.
Poitou-Charentes’ Angoulême is famous for its International Comic Book Festival and the Circuit des Ramparts classic car race. On a plateau of rock overlooking a meander of the Charente river, Angoulême is known as the “balcony of the southwest.”
Located high above the Anguienne Valley, the cathedral was founded in the 12th century and completed less than 20 years later.
Just across the street from the cathedral, this museum tells the story of several thousand years in the Angoulême area.
It’s interesting to see how the northern and southern parts of Angoulême contrast when exploring the highest and oldest neighborhoods in the city.
The world’s third-largest comic festival draws hundreds of thousands of visitors each year at the end of January.
The festival’s major events take place at the Cité Internationale de la Bande Dessinée et de l’Image, a large complex with a library, cinema, and congress center.
The Rempart de Bieulieu was the first to be converted into a walkway and had cast-iron gas lights every few steps and breathtaking views of the Charente.
Due to the outstanding water quality in the Charente Valley, papermaking was a big business, and the former mill on a river island preserves a piece of this history.
This tower is believed to be the birthplace of Marguerite de Navarre, the sister of King Francis I. During the 19th century, Paul Abadie, best known for renovating Notre Dame in Paris, helped convert the tower into a town hall.
From the 1940s to the 1950s, the Circuit des Remparts was a Grand Prix tearing through Angoulême and driven by drivers such as Juan Manuel Fangio, Raymond Sommer, and Maurice Trintingant.
Paul Abadie also had a hand renovating this church, which had suffered from centuries of turbulence in which the Hundred Years’ War damaged it, the French Wars of Religion, and the Revolution.
