Annecy Overview

Lake Annecy feeds the Thiou River in Annecy, an alpine town in southeastern France. Cobblestone streets, winding canals, and pastel-colored houses make up its Vieille Ville (old town). The medieval Château d’Annecy, once home to the Counts of Geneva, now houses a museum with regional artifacts, such as Alpine furniture and religious art, as well as a natural history exhibition.

Geography

The Fier forms the northwestern border of the commune. There are four mountains in the surrounding area: Mont Veyrier, Mont Semnoz, La Tournette, and Parmesan.

History

Le vieil Annecy (“Old Annecy”; not to be confused with Annecy-le-Vieux, formerly a neighboring town but now merged into Annecy) was a Roman settlement. Annecy served as the court of the counts of Geneva or Genevois beginning in the 10th century. In 1401, the counts of Savoy acquired it. As of 1444, it was the capital of Genevois, Faucigny, and Beaufortain provinces.

During the Counter-Reformation, Annecy became a center for Calvinism after the old Bishopric of Geneva was transferred there in 1535. A bishop of Annecy from 1602 to 1622, Francis of Sales was born in Sales, France, in 1567; his relics are preserved in the cathedral. France conquered the Savoy region during the French Revolution. As a result, Annecy became part of the Mont Blanc department, whose capital is Chambery. 1801 marked the suppression of the Catholic diocese.

Annecy was returned to the King of Sardinia after the Bourbon Restoration in 1815, and the Catholic diocese was restored in 1822. Following the Treaty of Turin in 1860, Savoy became the capital of the new department of Haute-Savoie. 1949 was the year of the second round of the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) talks in Annecy. Several murders were committed in the Annecy area in 2012.

Population

125,694 (2015)

Climate

Despite Annecy’s relatively far inland location, it has an oceanic climate (Köppen: Cfb). Its elevation makes summers relatively moderate, although extreme heat spikes can occur. There are occasional freezing temperatures during winter, but the temperature stays mainly in the single digits during the daytime with frequent cold rains. There is a tendency to have air frost during the night, and snowfall is not unusual.

Culture

Annecy has been home to the Annecy International Animated Film Festival since 1960 and the Rencontres Internationales d’Annecy Cinéma & Architecture since 1999.

Economy

Linen and cotton goods, glass, cutlery, earthenware, and leather were the leading manufacturers in the 19th century. In addition to linen bleaching, iron mining was also carried out in the area. There were factories for linen and cotton goods, felt hats, and paper at Annecy-le-Vieux, as well as a “celebrated” bell foundry during the First World War.

Transport

Lyon, Geneva, Paris, Grenoble, and several regional destinations are accessible from the Gare d’Annecy railway station.

Only private aircraft use the Annecy – Haute-Savoie – Mont Blanc Airport.

Is Annecy France worth visiting?

There is no doubt that Annecy is worth visiting! Visitors love its romantic old town and the beautiful natural scenery surrounding it. You’ll enjoy one-of-a-kind adventures in the surrounding mountains and a throwback experience in its heritage sites.

Top-Rated Things to Do in Annecy

Palais de l’Île

In the Canal du Thiou, this 12th-century monument is Annecy’s most photographed monument. Visitors will find the best views and photo opportunities of the Palais de l’Île on the Pont sur le Thiou (bridge).

Musée-Château d’Annecy

High above the town, the Musée-Château d’Annecy boasts magnificent views of the lake and the surrounding mountains. The castle was constructed in phases from the medieval to the Renaissance periods.

Recreational Activities at Lac d’Annecy

Visitors can enjoy unspoiled alpine scenery and various recreational activities at Lac d’Annecy. Its shimmering waters are considered the cleanest in Europe, and its view is stunning. Walking, cycling, sunbathing, swimming, and boating are all enjoyable activities against snow-dusted mountain peaks.

Shopping and Dining on Rue Sainte-Claire

Shopping and dining are both popular in Annecy’s Rue Sainte-Claire, near the Palais de l’Île. Its lively Rue Sainte-Claire is brimming with old-world charm, making it one of the town’s main streets.

Eglise Saint-Maurice

This church is the oldest in Annecy and is designated as a historical monument. A chapel for the Dominican convent once stood in this 15th-century church. In the 19th century, it became the parish church for the town.

Cathédrale Saint-Pierre

This cathedral is tucked away on a narrow side street, but it’s worth exploring. During the Protestant Reformation, the Genevan Bishops sought refuge in Annecy and built this church between 1535 and 1538.

Pont des Amours

The “Lovers’ Bridge” spans the Canal du Vassé that flows from the Lac d’Annecy under the canopy of leafy trees. Its majestic lakeside scenery seems to inspire romance with its arched ironwork bridge.

Picnic on the Champs de Mars

The Champs de Mars border the Lac d’Annecy and the Jardins de l’Europe, so the views are fabulous. Since domestic animals used to graze on the Champs de Mars, it is also known as “le Pâquier” (“pasturage” in the local dialect).

Jardins de l’Europe

Another beautiful park beside the lake is the Jardins de l’Europe. Located next to the Pont des Amours and offering views of the Chateau d’Annecy, this lush green space is filled with flowers. It is a short walk from the gardens to the Eglise Saint-Maurice.

Basilique de la Visitation

Perched on a hilltop above the Old Town, this Neo-Romanesque basilica is worth a visit just for the view. A steep, strenuous hike from Annecy’s Old Town is required to reach here; the effort is rewarded with sweeping views of the surrounding countryside.
