Antibes Overview

There is a resort town called Antibes on the French Riviera (Côte d’Azur) between Cannes and Nice. It is famous for its old town, enclosed by 16th-century ramparts and the star-shaped Fort Carré. In the marina at Port Vauban, you can see luxury yachts moored. Juan-les-Pins, a chic resort with buzzing nightlife, is separated from Antibes by the forested Cap d’Antibes peninsula, dotted with grand villas.

History

There are traces of occupation dating back to the early Iron Age in the castle and cathedral area. As evidenced by numerous underwater amphorae and wrecks off Antibes, there was an indigenous community with links to Mediterranean populations, including the Etruscans, beneath the Holy Spirit Chapel. The Phocaeans of Marseille, however, traded most with the Greek world.

Phocaeans founded the Greek colony of Antibes from Massalia. As it is located on the opposite side of the Var estuary from Nice, it was named Antipolis (Greek, lit. “Opposite-City”).

Antipolis was founded relatively late in the classical Greek period (4th century B.C.) because Marseille had trade routes along the coast and strongholds such as Olbia at Hyères, and trading posts such as Antipolis itself and later Nikaia; Strabo mentions it.

It has yet to be discovered precisely where the Greek city is located. Due to Greek colonial practices, it was likely built at the foot of the Antibes rock in the old town. Castle and church (former cathedral) have been identified as sites of Hellenistic occupation. It is clear from the goods unearthed during these excavations that imported products from the Marseille region dominated, along with ceramics from Campania.

Nikaia and Antipolis were repeatedly attacked by the Ligurian Deceates and Oxybiens tribes in the second century B.C. Marseille’s Greeks appealed to Rome as they had done a few years ago against the Salyens federation. Quintus Opimius defeated the Decéates and Oxybiens in 154 BC and took Aegythna from them.

Sports

Basketball is an essential part of the local culture; a national training center is located here. Several games of the 1999 FIBA EuroBasket were played in the now-demolished Jean Bunoz Sports Hall. Olympique Antibes plays its home games at the Azur Arena Antibes, home to France’s top division LNB Pro A basketball team.

The local football team is F.C. Antibes, who play at the Stade du Fort Carré, known for hosting a 1938 World Cup match between Sweden and Cuba.

Transport

Several railway stations serve Antibes, including Nice, Cannes, Marseille, Grasse, St Raphael, Les Arcs, Milan, Ventimiliga, and Paris. Stationed in the town center, this railway station is easily accessible. There is also a railway station in Juan-les-Pins. Cannes Airport and Nice Côte d’Azur Airport are the nearest airports.

Population

74,875 (2015)

Climate

Antibes have short, warm, humid, dry, and mostly clear summers and long, cold, windy, partly cloudy winters. Temperatures average 41°F to 81°F throughout the year and rarely dip below 35°F or rise above 85°F. It is best to visit Antibes from early July to late August if you intend to enjoy hot-weather activities.

Is Antibes worth visiting?

An incredible yachting experience can be had in the vibrant seaside town of Antibes, which offers a rich cultural heritage. The city celebrates numerous festivals annually, making it a great holiday destination. Known for its picturesque cobblestone streets and fantastic beach resorts, Antibes is the perfect combination of old and new.

Why is Antibes famous?

There are numerous markets in Antibes, including La Marche Provençal, famous for its fresh fruit, vegetables, flowers, cheese, honey, jams, and more. As the afternoon progresses, the market transforms into a craft market. No matter what time of day or week you go, something local and exciting is always happening.

Beaches

Almost 50 public and private beaches are nearby, not to mention the informal coves along the Sentier de Tire-Poil, where you can relax on the rocks and cool off in the water.

Musée Picasso

Even without considering what lies inside, this historic building is an essential part of Antibes’ culture. The original Greek Acropolis was built on top of the Roman walls, which extend for the first few meters.

Port Vauban

The quay at Port Vauban boasts one of the world’s most stunning concentrations of wealth. Oligarchs’ superyachts have been moored here since the Romans, and Vauban, the military engineer extraordinaire, fortified it in the 1600s.

Le Nomade

Musée d’Archéologie

Antibes’ collections of historical artifacts are housed in the late 17th century Bastion Saint-André, designed by Vauban. Due to the bastion’s size, and the museum’s unassuming appearance, the exhibition space is small.
