Arles Overview
The city of Arles is located in the Provence region of southern France, along the Rhône River. It inspired Van Gogh’s paintings, which influenced the contemporary art displayed at the Fondation of Vincent Van Gogh. Arles was once a provincial capital of ancient Rome, known for the Arles Amphitheater (les Arènes d’Arles), which hosts plays, concerts, and bullfights.
Geography
The Camargue delta is formed when two branches of the river Rhône divide upstream of Arles. As the Camargue is administratively a part of Arles, it is the largest commune in Metropolitan France by area. However, its population is only slightly above 50,000. More than seven times the area of Paris, it covers 758.93 km2 (293.02 sq mi).
History
Around 800 BC, the Ligurians occupied this area. There have also been discoveries of Celtic influences in the later periods. Before being taken over by the Romans, the city became an important Phoenician trading port.
In 123 BC, the Romans took the town and expanded it into an important city. 104 BC saw the construction of a canal linking the Mediterranean Sea to the Ionian Sea. There was a competition between Arles and Massalia (Marseille) further along the coast.
In defense of Julius Caesar, Arles’ leaders provided military support to Pompey. As a reward for supporting Pompey, Massalia’s possessions were taken from it and transferred to Arelate. There was a base for the Roman legion Legio VI Ferrata, which established the town as a colony for veterans. Colonia Iulia Paterna Arelatensium Sextanorum was its full name as a colony, “the ancestral Julian colony of Arles.”
The city of Arelate was of considerable importance in the province of Gallia Narbonensis. Approximately 40 hectares (99 acres) of land were devoted to the site, which included a theater, triumphal arch, Roman circus, theatre, and a complete circuit of walls. The ancient city of Arles was closer to the sea than it is now and served as an important port. Hundreds of years of silt have accumulated in the former harbor due to the river’s flow. On the Rhône, the city is home to the southernmost bridge (and still does).
Climate
In Arles, summer is hot and humid (Köppen: Csa); the mean annual temperature is 14.6 degrees Celsius (1948-1999). Summers are warm and moderately dry, with average temperatures between 22 °C and 24 °C, while winters are cool and mild, with an average temperature of about seven °C. The city is constantly subject to the influence of the mistral, a cold wind which can cause sudden and severe frosts, especially during the winter months. As a result, rainfall (636 mm per year) is evenly distributed from September to May, with a less pronounced summer drought than in other Mediterranean regions.

In 1904, part of Arles’ territory was ceded to Port-Saint-Louis-du-Rhône and in 1925 to Saint-Martin-de-Crau.
Sport
The AC Arles-Avignon football team was a French professional team. They played in the fourth division of French football, the Championnat de France Amateur, before being dissolved in 2016. Over 17,000 people can watch them play at Parc des Sports, which has a capacity of just over 17,000.
Culture
Arles is one of the world’s cultural hotspots. Rencontres d’Arles, an annual photography festival, is held in Arles, where the French national school of photography is located.
Actes Sud, one of the major French publishing houses, is also located in Arles.
