Arnhem Overview

Arnhem is a city and municipality situated in the east of the Netherlands. It was founded by merging two medieval cities at the source of their names: Nederrijn and Sint-Jansbeek. This is reflective of its history in historic buildings that are still very much treasured.

Arnhem is home to a variety of organizations and institutions, including the Hogeschool van Arnhem en Nijmegen, ArtEZ Institute of the Arts, Netherlands Open Air Museum, and National Sports Centre Papendal. The north corner of the municipality is part of the Hoge Veluwe National Park, one of Holland’s most popular and imposing hiking destinations. It is an area covering around 55 square kilometers (21 sq mi) that consist primarily of heathlands with many sand dunes, woodlands, and streams.

Early history

There is little evidence of human activity from the late Neanderthals in Arnhem before about 70,000 years ago. This site is from the Stone Age when Neanderthals lived in Europe. Most of what archaeologists have found here came from about 5000 BC and are relics of the hunters who used this forest as shelter. In Schaarsbergen, twelve grave mounds were found from 2400 BC, which brought the so-called Neolithic Revolution to the area of Arnhem. During this period in history, people learned how to farm and usually settled near bodies of water. This led to the rise of agriculture over hunting and gathering practices.

The earliest settlement in Arnhem dates from 1500 BC, which is evident by the traces of it located on the Hoogkamp. It is today known as a cobblestone path located near The Van Goyenstraat. So far, traces of settlement have been found in the inner city from around 700 BC and as soon as 500 BC. South of the Rhine, traces of settlement were found at Schuytgraaf.

From the beginning, the people who settled in Arnhem came from the surrounding forests at higher elevations. However, they didn’t settle on the banks of the Rhine River either. They settled not too far away from where their name would be derived from and is currently known as Sint-JansBeek, also known as Ydemaesse. Arnhem was originally built on seven streams that provided it with water. It wasn’t until 1530 that the city was actually located on the Rhine River.

Middle Ages

The first mention of Arnhem was in 893 where you could find the name Arneym or Arentheym. In 1233, it was listed as an independent city and Count Otto II of Guelders from Fullen made the town a part of Zutphin. Arnhem joined the Hanseatic League in 1443. In 1473, it was captured by Charles the Bold of Burgundy.

Climate

This city of some 60,000 residents has very similar temperatures to the rest of the Netherlands because it’s in a region with a climate classification (Cfb) that is adapted to the extremes of this region. Because Arnhem is at lower elevations, they have higher precipitation values due to its location on top of a large forested area.

Sport

This is the national sports development center of the Netherlands, located in Arnhem. The first event held here was the 1980 Summer Paralympics, which happened from 21 June to 5 July. Though the site began in 1993, it wasn’t until 2003 that it was fully adopted and taken offline from its previous hosts.

Sport in the city is principally focused on its association football club Vitesse Arnhem and its stadium the GelreDome built for the UEFA Euro 2000. It’s also notable that this stadium was specifically built for this tournament in 2000. Online footballing club FC Twente has had a positive decade, with success in the Eredivisie during their most successful year. They won the KNVB Cup in 2017.

Transport

Arnhem has had a main central railway station since 1845 – Arnhem Centraal railway station, which is serviced by the trains for Düsseldorf and Frankfurt.

Until 2016, there were also NS International trains to other destinations abroad. Some of the coaches went to Moscow.

There are three other stations in Arnhem! There’s the terminus station at Utrecht, Nijmegen, and Zutphen. It has several local railway services and a local bus depot terminating at the Velperpoort station.

KLM operates a bus from Schiphol Airport to Arnhem Central Station for their customers. The city of Arnhem is the only place in the Netherlands with a trolleybus system.

What is Arnhem known for?

Arnhem is most well-known for the Battle of Arnhem, which happened in 1944 during WWII. It is famous for its historical museums and farmer’s zoo, which bring the past to life while they live on. And it’s recognized as a fashion hotspot, with the best shopping experience.
