Arras Overview
Northern France is home to the city of Arras. During WWI, soldiers built a network of tunnels in a quarry called the Carrière Wellington. Vimy Memorial honors the Canadian soldiers who died during the war north of the city, surrounded by lush countryside. In town, the cobbled Place des Héros features buildings with Flemish facades, including the Town Hall and bell tower. Located in the Abbey of St. Vaast is a museum dedicated to fine arts.
History
The Scarpe basin is inhabited by prehistoric humans. In Arras and Biache-Saint-Vaast, there are Stone Age settlements of the Mousterian culture at Mont-Saint-Vaast and Biache-Saint-Vaast. The discovery of stone tools evidenced it. During the Paleolithic period 170,000 years ago, forerunners of modern humans developed a distinctive type of stone knapping known as the Levallois technique.
Arras was founded on the boat of Baudimont by the Belgic tribe of the Atrebates, which named it Nemetocenna after a nemeton that probably existed there. Under the Romans, it became an important garrison town and was renamed Nemetacum/Atrebatum.
Archaeologists found Late Iron Age settlements in the Scarpe valley after excavating and recovering data. In the nearby municipalities of Arras, Hamblain-les-Prés, and Saint-Pol, these buildings were believed to be farms.
Nemetacum was known throughout the empire for its arts, crafts, and textile trade in the 4th century. It was taken and destroyed by Germanic invaders between 406 and 407. Clodion le Chevelu led the Salian Franks into control of the current Somme department in 428. The Roman general Aetius then negotiated for peace with Clodion, granting the Franks the status of “foederati” fighting for Rome.
The Abbey of Saint Vaast was founded in 667 by Saint Aubert, bishop of Cambrai, and developed into an immensely wealthy Benedictine monastery during the Carolingian period. The modern town of Arras began as a grain market near the abbey. Viking attacks on town and abbey occurred during the 9th century when they settled in Normandy to the west. Through its successful synthesis of Carolingian, Ottonian, and English artistic styles, the abbey flourished in the 11th century and played an essential role in the development of medieval painting.
Location
Arras is located in the Hauts-de-France region of northern France. Nord, Pas-de-Calais, Somme, Oise, and Aisne are the five departments that makeup Hauts-de-France. It is located in the Artois, a former province of northern France, in the Pas-de-Calais department’s Arras district (arrondissement d’Arras).
Geology
Chalk, a soft, white, porous sedimentary rock that forms the European stratigraphic unit, is the main component of the soil in Arras. That Chalk Group was deposited in the Late Cretaceous period 90 million years ago. Buildings and houses in Arras were constructed with this material, leading to the city being nicknamed La ville blanche (the White Town). Clay is also found in the soil of the Arras area, which was used in the manufacture of bricks, the construction of less noble buildings, and the embellishment of façades. Most clay is found in La Terre Potier in the western part of the city.
Hydrography
Arras is crossed by two rivers, the Scarpe and the Crinchon; both are left tributaries of the 350-kilometer-long Scheldt (L’Escaut in French). Crinchon is a river of 19 kilometers (12 miles) flowing underground through Arras. Scarpe is 102 kilometers (63 miles) long, of which two-thirds are canals.
Climate
Arras mostly has a Western European oceanic climate (Köppen climate classification: Cfb), which is affected by the North Atlantic Current due to its proximity to the English Channel (La Manche in French). Despite being near the sea, temperatures are mild throughout the year and frequent rains in all seasons. The temperature changes are moderate, but some brief cold spells are due to oceanic and continental influences. This climate can also be described as semi-oceanic (in French, Climat océanique dégradé).

Arras has a population of 43,693, with a population density of 3,756.92 people per square kilometer (9,880.69 per square mile). Arrageois (males) and Arrageoise (females) are the names given to the residents. It has a young population, with most residents aged 15-29. There is a ratio of 100 to 113 males to females and 89 to 100 males to females: twenty-eight thousand males (47%) and twenty-two thousand females (53%). One hundred twenty-four thousand two hundred people live in the Arras metropolitan area.

The Basilique-Cathédrale Notre-Dame et Saint-Vaast in Arras is an episcopal see of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Arras.

Arras belongs to Lille’s Académie de Lille (School District). The city’s schools are 11 kindergartens, 11 elementary schools, eight junior high schools, and seven lycées (high schools).
