Assen Overview
Assen is the capital of the province of Drenthe in the northeastern Netherlands. About 20 km south of Groningen, it is located. A city charter was granted in 1809 to the city.
History
The history of the capital of Drenthe can be traced back to at least 1258 when it was necessary to find a new location for Marienkamp Abbey, which had originally been constructed near Coevorden as a punishment for the slaughter in 1227 of the army of the Bishop of Utrecht by Drenthe’s peasants, known as the Battle of Ane, in which the bishop was killed. The nunnery was built as a punishment by his successor. It was located in a barren peat area that occasionally flooded, so a better location had to be found. An area known as Witten, where only a few farms were located at the time, provided a better and significantly drier place for the Cistercian abbey. Deurze, Witten, and Peelo were villages around it. Assen’s former district has a history dating back to the time of Dolmens, but it is between two new communities. Over the centuries, Assen developed around the “relocated” abbey, which probably dates back to the 1260s.
Industry
During the early 1900s, Assen began to play a more prominent role in the industrial sector. Originally an area populated by civil servants, establishing a slaughterhouse, a dairy factory, and an iron foundry enhanced growth prospects. By establishing numerous psychiatric hospitals and healthcare centers, Assen became the province’s healthcare center around 1930.
Cycling
The Dutch province of Drenthe is home to Assen, also called the “cycling capital.” Cycling events such as the Drentse fietsvierdaagse and the Jeugdtour are held regularly in the city and its surroundings. Assen hosted the prologue and opening stage of the 2009 Vuelta an Espaa.

Education
Drenthe College offers secondary vocational education (MBO) in Assen. Due to strong ties between D.C. and the T.T. Circuit Assen, this vocational school offers programs such as “Car technician,” “First car engineer,” and “First motorcycle technician.” Each of the three faculties in Assen and a few others in Meppel and Emmen has about 8,000 students.
In addition to the Hanze University of Applied Sciences, Assen is also home to the Hanze Institute of Technology. There are about 100 university students here, some from the Bachelor of Electrical and Electronic Engineering program and some from the Master of Smart Systems Engineering program.
