In the north-eastern suburbs of Paris, France, Aulnay-sous-Bois is a commune located in the Seine-Saint-Denis department. There is 13.9 km between it and Kilometre zero. In French, Aulnaysiens and Aulnaysiennes are the residents of this commune.
Situation
Aulnay-sous-Bois lies in the Paris region, 19 km north of Notre-Dame Cathedral, 1 km east of Le Bourget Airport, and 5 km south of Charles de Gaulle Airport. The commune has 1,620 hectares of land covering an area of 6.5 km from north to south and 1.4 to 4.3 km from east to west.

In the commune, there is a main rail line that connects Paris to Soissons, Laon, and Hirson and serves Aulnay-sous-Bois, the terminus of the Transilien Paris to Crépy-en-Valois (connecting with TER Villers to Cotterêts/Soissons/Laon) and all buses and semi-direct services (Roissy and Mitry-Mory). There is a park-and-ride at the station that charges a fee for parking.

Toponymy
“Aulnay” derives from Medieval Latin alnetum, meaning “alder grove” after ancient alder trees (French: aulnes), which covered Aulnay-sous-Bois. According to another theory, Aulnay derives its name from pagellus alnetenis or Country Aulnaye.
History
The area was first settled around 6000 BC (remains found in the Valley of Sausset). Farmers lived around the Savigny Farm of Sabinus between the 4th and 2nd centuries B.C. In addition to Savigny and Nonneville, part of the current village, two places were independent of Saint Sulpice’s parish. The lords of Aulnay were known as d’Aulnay until the 15th century. The Gourgues family inherited the estate of Jacques Coitier through his nephew. The Canal de l’Ourcq was dug to facilitate relations with Paris during the Napoleonic era. The Canal between Paris and Claye was completed in 1813 after excavation began in 1803.
The first Prussian occupation of the village is recorded in the city council meeting register of 13 May 1814. Prussian works occurred in 1814 and 1870 as well. It took many years for houses to be destroyed and fields to be abandoned. A postal boat service was established on the Canal de l’Ourcq from Paris to Meaux on 15 August 1838. In 1849, this service ceased. A station on the new Paris-Soissons line was opened by the French Northern Railway in 1875. This event played a significant role in the rise of Aulnay. From a fragment of the Forest of Bondy, the Parc district began to emerge in 1883. During the following years, cohabitation between the rural community of Vieux-Pays (Old Country) and the more urban community of Parc was challenging. Vieux-Pays would be divided into Aulnay-les-Bondy, and Parc would be divided into Aulnay-sous-Bois. In 1886, there were 1,012 inhabitants in Aulnay, up from 780 in 1885.
Parc residents made up the majority of the municipal council in 1896, but the board developed the entire community of Aulnay. A school, a post office, and streets were constructed south of the city. Many workers acquired land because of the “worker trains” created by the French Northern Railway. Large properties were fragmented, and lots were sold for the Parc. A holiday and residential area developed on the outskirts of Paris after the greenery enticed Parisians.
