Avignon Overview

Avignon is located on the Rhône River in the Provence region of southeastern France. It served as the seat of the Catholic popes between 1309 and 1377. After becoming part of France in 1791, it remained under papal rule. It is evident in the massive Palais des Papes (Popes’ Palace) in the city center, surrounded by medieval stone ramparts.

Toponymy

The Greeks reported the earliest forms of the name: Аὐενιὼν Aueniṑn (Stephen of Byzantium, Strabo, IV, 1, 11) and Άουεννίων Aouenníōn (Ptolemy II, x).

The Roman name Avennĭo Cavărum (Mela, II, 575, Pliny III, 36), i.e., “Avignon of Cavares,” accurately shows that Avignon was one of the three cities of the Celtic-Ligurian tribe of Cavares, along with Cavaillon and Orange.

History

Excavations at Rocher des Doms and Balance district indicate that Avignon has been inhabited since the Neolithic period.

A small anthropomorphic stele (height: 20 cm), found in an area of land being reworked in the northern part of Rocher des Doms in 1960 and 1961, was uncovered by Sylvain Gagnière. This Burdigalian sandstone “tombstone” has the shape of a tombstone and is carved with a highly stylized human figure with no mouth and small cavities in its eyes. This type of stele was discovered with an indentation on the bottom, shifted slightly to the right, forming an image of the sun.

It dates from the southern Chalcolithic period, between the Copper Age and the Early Bronze Age, and represents the “first Avignonnais.”

Other findings from this excavation near the large water reservoir on top of the rock confirmed this, including two polished greenstone axes, a lithic industry characteristic of “shepherds of the plateaux.” In addition, some Chalcolithic objects for adornment were found, along with an abundance of Hallstatt pottery shards, which could have been native or imported (Ionian or Phocaean).

Christianity

Although the date of the Christianization of the city is unknown with certainty, it is known that the first evangelizers and prelates were within the hagiographic tradition, as evidenced by Nectarius, the first historical Bishop of Avignon, participating in the regional council at the Cathedral of Riez on 29 November 439, assisted by the bishops of the three provinces of Arles.

Geography

Avignon is located on the left bank of the Rhône, about 580 km (360 mi) south of Paris, 229 km (142 mi) south of Lyon, and 85 km (53 mi) north-northwest of Marseille. This department has three communes: Barbentane and Rognonas in the West, Châteaurenard in the South, and Noves in the North.

Geology

Limestone is abundant in the area around Avignon, which is used as a building material. Molasse burdigalienne, a soft limestone in the region, was used to build the existing city walls, which measure 4,330 meters long.

Hydrography

The Rhone passes along the western edge of the city. Still, it is divided into two arms: the Petit Rhône, or “dead arm,” which gives by Avignon, and the Grand Rhône, or “live arm,” which passes Villeneuve-lès-Avignon. There is an island between the two branches, the Île de la Barthelasse. A separate island, the L’Île de Piot, once formed the southernmost tip of the Île de la Barthelasse.

Climate

Avignon has a Mediterranean hot-summer climate (Köppen climate classification: Csa). However, it is less affected by dry summers than coastal areas like Marseilles because of its more sheltered location. The climate is mild-cool during the winter and hot during the summer, with moderate rainfall throughout the year. A minimum temperature of around 28°C is averaged daily in July and August, while nine °C is averaged daily in January and February.

In the urban area, there are more than 300,000 square meters of retail space, and there are 469 square meters per thousand residents, compared to 270 square meters on average in France. There is no doubt that Avignon Nord’s commercial area is one of the largest in Europe.

  • Airports – There are several international routes to England from the Avignon – Caumont Airport, located on the commune’s southeastern border.
  • Water transport – Throughout history, the city has relied heavily on the Rhône for transportation. There are two commercial ports, a docking station for boat cruises, and various riverfront developments in Avignon.

The AC Arles-Avignon football team played in the professional league. They played in Ligue 2 after competing in Ligue 1 in 2010-2011, relegated back down the following season, and folding in 2016. Over 17,000 people could fit into the Parc des Sports, where they played.

Education

Académie d’Aix-Marseille administers all schools within the commune of Avignon. There are 26 state nursery schools (écoles maternelles) for children under 6 and 32 state primary schools (écoles élémentaires) for children up to 11 years old. Four private schools are also available.
