A city in central Slovakia, Banská Bystrica is located on the Huron River in a valley surrounded by the Low Tatras, the Veľká Fatra, and the Kremnica Mountains. Banská Bystrica has a population of 76,000, making it the sixth most populous municipality in Slovakia.
Banská Bystrica derives from two roots: Banská (from Slovak ba-a – mine) and Bystrica (from Slavic Bystrica – swift stream). In Hungarian, the town’s name is Besztercebánya, which comes from the Beszterce stream (from its Slavic name, Bystrica), and the suffix bánya comes from the town’s mines. In 1255, King Béla IV of Hungary granted the town royal privileges and called the city Villa Nova Bystrice (meaning “New Town of Bystrica”) after the river.
Banská Bystrica’s earliest account was linked to the exploitation of copper deposits (and, to a lesser extent, silver, gold, and iron). At the Pania Dolina locality, prehistoric miners used tools dating back to 2000–1700 BC. Lusatians settled in Špania Dolina, Horné Pršany, Malachov, and Sásová. The local toponym Hrádok, meaning a small fort (later: castle), still refers to ancient hill fort locations. A Celtic tribe called the Contini (Pchov culture) inhabited the territory in the 3rd century BC. The Germanic tribe of the Quadi took it over during the Roman Era, which left behind a hoard of silver artifacts in Netopierska jaskyňa (Bat Cave).
Formerly, the city was a Slavic settlement. It was incorporated into the Zólyom county of the Kingdom of Hungary after the Hungarian conquest of the Carpathian Basin. Saxon immigrants built stone churches in the then-independent settlement of Sásová in the first half of the 13th century. Banská Bystrica began as a permanent settlement in the 9th century, according to Slovak archaeologists. In 1243–44, the town was said to have disappeared due to the attack of the Mongols. King Béla IV granted the city of Banská Bystrica extensive municipal privileges in 1255 to attract more skilled settlers. German immigrants to this and other counties later became known as Carpathian Germans. As a regional mining center, the city flourished. In the second half of the 13th century, it built the Late Romanesque Church of the Virgin Mary. As part of the same period, Banská Bystrica acquired its coat of arms inspired by the coat of arms of the ruling dynasty of the Rpáds, which was also used as the historical flag of the Kingdom of Hungary. There were fifty guilds of local craftsmen, with the butchers’ guild being the oldest.
Banská Bystrica is at an altitude of 362 meters (1,188 ft) above sea level and covers an area of 103.37 square kilometers (39.9 square mi). Located halfway between Slovakia’s two largest cities, it is 208 kilometers (129 miles) northeast of Bratislava and 217 kilometers (135 miles) west of Košice. The town is connected with Zvolen, another central village 20 kilometers (12 miles) south, by a chain of discrete suburbs and towns.
Banská Bystrica enjoys comfortable summers, freezing winters, and partly cloudy skies all year. Temperatures typically range between 20°F and 77°F over the year and are rarely below 3°F or above 87°F. Banská Bystrica is best visited for warm-weather activities between mid-June and late August.
With 79,368 residents in 2013, it ranks 6th among Slovakia’s municipalities. In 2005, the population density was 790 people per square kilometer.
In 2001, 46.6% of the population were Roman Catholics, 30.2% were non-religious, and 13.9% were Lutherans.
Copper mining used to be Banská Bystrica’s leading source of prosperity, but nowadays, tourism, timber, and mechanical industry are the most critical industries. Slovak Post Services (ranked third largest employer) and Lesy SR (ranked thirteenth largest employer) are two of the largest employers in the country, and Banská Bystrica is their headquarters. To develop one of Slovakia’s major metropolises, the city intends to collaborate with Zvolen and other nearby municipalities during 2007-2013. Tourism, services, administration, and entrepreneurship are part of Banská Bystrica’s economic development strategy. Natural and cultural heritage, information technology, and infrastructure are proclaimed to be the three pillars of future development.
