Bastia Overview

On the French island of Corsica, Bastia is a city. There are bars and restaurants lining the Old Port, which the twin-towered Church of St. Jean-Baptiste backs. Terra Nova is a centuries-old citadel with ramparts built by Genoese rulers. St. Stephen’s Cathedral is nearby. Paintings and marble statues adorn the walls of Marie. A museum showcasing the history of Bastia is located in the Governor’s Palace.

Geography

Bastia is the island’s principal port, located at the base of the Cap Corse, between the sea and the mountains. It is located 35 km (22 mi) from the northern tip of the Cap Corse, 50 km (31 mi) west of Elba, an Italian island, and 90 km (56 mi) from continental Italy, which can be seen a few days each year when visibility is good.

Geographically, Bastia is defined by its position between the sea and the mountains. A 960-meter (3,150-foot) mountain surrounds the city on the eastern side (see photo opposite). The city’s steep mountain and several hills form a typical Cap Corse relief. The city developed mainly along a narrow coastal band of about 1.5 km (1 mi) wide, a tiny part of the commune’s 19.38 km2 (7.48 sq mi).

Climate

Bastia is situated in the Mediterranean region. About five days of frost occur yearly, and the average annual temperature is 15.5°C (60°F). There are frequent and violent winds and copious precipitation, but there are also 240 sunny days yearly on average.

Transport

  • Bus transport – Autobus Bastiais operates a bus network with 14 routes in Bastia’s urban area.
  • Rail transport – In the center of Bastia, there is a railway station operated by Chemins de fer de la Corse.
  • Sea transport – Bastia’s port served 2,291,944 passengers in 2011, making it the busiest port on the Mediterranean Sea despite its small size.
  • Air transport – Lucciana, a commune 16 kilometers south of Bastia, is home to the Bastia – Poretta Airport.

History

The site of Cardo and the northeastern district of the current commune of Bastia and Pietrabugno formed a Pieve during Roman times, and the Vanacimi people occupied this territory. The city of Bastia didn’t exist, and Bastia isn’t mentioned by Ptolemy, Strabo, or Pliny in their descriptions of the island.

The territory or piece of Mantino depended on the lords Loretesi by the end of the ninth century. With the help of the Marquis of Massa, Da Furiani, Aschesi, and Laschesi drove them out in 1072.

Two Genoese governors were sent to Corsica in 1370: Leonello Lomellino and Aluigi Toriorino. Due to Corsica’s enormous expense and little profit, the Republic soon withdrew and stopped intervening in the island’s affairs. To manage the economy on the island for the Republic of Genoa, some Genoese gentlemen formed a partnership called the Maona. Cristoforo Maruffo, Leonello Lomellino, Giovanni da Balagnera, Aluigi Tortorino, and Andreolo Ficone were the five partners. The governors brought a thousand soldiers with them and were titled governors.

After an expedition to Cinarca, Leonello Lomellino returned as governor and fortified Aléria to gain an advantage over Count Arrigo della Rocca. As Count Arrigo and his allies crossed the mountains again, they made incursions into Cap Corse: having met no resistance, they besieged Aléria, which surrendered within four months. Having lost all support, Leonello returned to Biguglia and built the castle of Bastia to maintain his sea communication.”

Best Things to Do in Bastia (France)

Old Port

Stroll along the quays of the U-shaped harbor, surrounded by dense clusters of houses. Several buildings are painted in pale shades of ochre, and a baroque church with twin cupolas rises above them all.

Church of Sainte-Marie

Built between 1604 and 1625, the current architecture showcases the Genoese baroque style, as you’ll see on the western facade when you see the pilasters and pediments.

Bastia Citadel

Don your comfortable shoes and explore the citadel high on the cliff tops south of the old harbor. Bastiglia is the name of this walled district, which is where Bastia gets its name.

Le Palais des Gouverneurs

Built at the same time as the rest of the citadel, this palace was the headquarters for the Genoese governors of Corsica. A watchtower stood over the entrance to the port in its earliest days as a defensive structure.

Musée de Bastia

Information boards explain Bastia’s birth and growth, its role as a power seat, the culture that flourished here, and the people who ruled the Governor’s Palace. The museum contains a large-scale model of the city, furniture, paintings, liturgical treasures, and maritime artifacts, including sailors’ chests, highlighting the importance of the sea to the Genoese.

Chapelle Sainte-Croix

Within the citadel is a baroque oratory with an almost overwhelming rococo interior decorated with gold, statues, carved marble, and rich murals. Looking at the fretwork, gilding, and cherubs, you might think you’re in a Louis XV salon.

Place Saint-Nicolas

At 300 meters by 70 meters, Bastia’s main square is the largest in France, almost twice the size of Venice’s Piazza San Marco. There is something special about this seafront location, which is surrounded to the west by 19th-century townhouses and opens up to the commercial port to the east.

Place du Marché

This photogenic plaza is surrounded by elegantly decaying apartment buildings with painted shutters and has a border of trees providing shade to outdoor restaurants.

Corse Miniature Animée

The village is filled with animated figurines: a blacksmith works at the lathe, and villagers wash clothes in a stream.

Église de Monserrato

Near Bastia and walkable in 20 minutes, this baroque church has something you will only find in a few European churches.
