Bayonne Overview

In the Basque Country region of southwest France, Bayonne lies at the confluence of the Nive and Adour rivers. Narrow medieval streets characterize the old Grand Bayonne district. The Gothic-style Bayonne Cathedral, its 13th-century cloister, and the Château Vieux castle can be found here. In the Petit Bayonne district across the Nive river is the Musée Basque, a museum dedicated to the region’s arts, crafts, and traditions.

Geography

Bayonne lies on the border between Basque Country and Gascony in the southwest of France. 6 km from the Atlantic coast, it is on the left bank of the Adour, where it meets the Nive, a tributary of the river. Labor was the Basque province that included the commune.

Hydrography

Adour river was the source of the city’s development. Between Tarnos (Landes) for the right bank and Anglet (Pyrénées-Atlantiques) for the left bank, the river is part of the Natura 2000 network from its source at Bagnères-de-Bigorre to its exit to the Atlantic Ocean after Bayonne.

Climate

Bayonne’s weather is similar to that of its neighbor Biarritz, described below, with heavy rainfall; the oceanic climate is a result of the Atlantic Ocean’s proximity. It averages eight °C in winter and 20 °C in summer. In the 2003 European heat wave, the lowest temperature was 12.7 °C on 16 January 1985, and the highest temperature was 40.6 °C on 4 August 2003. There are rarely persistent rains along the Basque coast, except during winter storms, and intense thunderstorms of short duration are common.

Transport

  • Road – Bayonne is situated at A63 (Bordeaux-Spain) intersection and A64 D1 (towards Toulouse).
  • Bridges – Both the Nive and the Adour are crossed by numerous bridges.
  • A cycling network – The left bank of the Adour has bicycle paths, as does the left bank of the Nive, and there are some bicycle lanes along various city axes.

Public transport

  • Urban network – Bayonne is connected to other communes within the urban transport perimeter by most of the Chronoplus bus lines operated by the Transdev agglomeration of Bayonne.
  • Interurban networks – The Pyrenees-Atlantiques long-distance coach network managed by Transport 64 connects Bayonne to many cities in the western half of the department, including Saint-Jean-de-Luz and Saint-Palais.
  • Rail transport – Bayonne is an essential station on the Bordeaux-Irun line located in the Saint-Esprit district.
  • Air transport – Management of the airport is handled by the joint association of Biarritz-Anglet-Bayonne, which includes the Bayonne Basque Country Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

Etymology

Although the modern Basque spelling is Baiona and the Gascon Occitan spelling is Bayonne, “Bayonne poses several historical as well as linguistic problems that have not yet been clarified.” The meaning of this phrase can be interpreted differently.

History

There is some belief that a fishing village existed on the site before ancient times, in the absence of accurate, objective data. Many traces of human occupation in the Bayonne region date back to the Middle Paleolithic, especially in Saint-Pierre-d’Irube. On the other hand, an earthen mound of about 14 m (46 ft) high has been discovered in the current Cathedral Quarter overlooking the Nive, which formed a natural port and natural protection. Adour swamps surrounded it on the north and west sides. Between Saint-Esprit and the Grand Bayonne lies the famous Bayonne Sea, which probably covered the entire location of Bourg-Neuf (in the Petit Bayonne district) and was about 1,200 meters wide. South of Saint-Léon hills, the Nive widens at its last bend. Despite this, the Adour valley narrows along the entire estuary length, making crossing easier than anywhere else.

Due to its obvious strategic importance, it must be presumed that this height has continuously been inhabited.

In the 1st century A.D., during the Roman occupation, Bayonne already seems to have been of some significance since the Romans surrounded the city with a wall to keep out the Tarbelli, Aquitani, or proto-Basques, who then occupied a territory that stretched south of modern-day Landes, to the contemporary French Basque country, to the Chalosse, the valleys of the Adour, the mountain streams of Pau, Pyrénées-Atlantiques, and to the Gave d’Oloron.

Education

On 14 December 2015, Bayonne had ten kindergartens and 22 primary schools (12 public and ten private schools, including two ikastolas). The first cycle of second-degree studies is offered by two public colleges (Albert Camus and Marracq colleges) and five private colleges (La Salle Saint-Bernard, Saint Joseph, Saint-Amand, Notre-Dame, and Largenté).

Health

Bayonne provides much of the hospital services for the aggregation of Bayonne and the southern Landes. In this area, some hospitals offer medical, obstetrical, surgical, or psychiatric care within 35 kilometers. In addition to Saint-Léon and Cam-de-Prats, several clinics in Saint-Jean-de-Luz serve the entire Basque Coast.

L’Atelier du Chocolat

Bayonne might not spring to mind when you think of chocolate, but it’s worth remembering that the first French cocoa ateliers were based here.

Bayonne Cathedral

Since it was a stop on the Way of St. James pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela for hundreds of years, the cathedral has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Cathedral Cloister

Bayonne Cathedral’s cloister, one of the largest in France, dates from 1240 and deserves a separate entry. Aside from being at the center of civic life, it was also a meeting place for district assemblies and corporations during the Middle Ages.

Grand Bayonne

Stroll down the pedestrianized Rue d’Espagne, which starts right next to the cathedral apse and has cafes, artisan shops, and stores selling Basque regional specialties.

A museum with Rembrandt, van Dyck, and Botticelli paintings, this attraction closed in 2011 for “temporary” renovations. In 2016, plans were announced for a complete renovation.

Fêtes de Bayonne

This Spanish and Basque traditional culture festival will remind you that you’re in a region of France where identities blur.

Botanic Garden

The garden consists of 1,000 taxa, but this isn’t a scientific garden, with plants arranged by species; instead, the plants are chosen for their beauty and fragrance.

Local Delicacies

Bayonne ham enjoys a reputation extending well beyond France’s borders. Similarly to Spanish Jamon Serrano, it is a cured ham that is never cooked but stored under special dry conditions for at least seven months.
