Belfort Overview
Between Lyon and Strasbourg, approximately 25 kilometers from the France-Switzerland border, Belfort is located in the Bourgogne-Franche-Comté region in northeastern France. In the Territoire de Belfort department, it is a prefecture.
History
The strategic location of Belfort, between the Vosges and the Jura, on a route linking the Rhine and the Rhône, has attracted human settlement since Roman times, and has also made it a frequent target for invading armies.
Gallo-Romans inhabited Belfort in the past. Later, the region was heavily settled by Germanic peoples during the Germanic migrations, particularly the Burgundians, who decided there after the Gallo-Romans had been driven out. In 1307, it was granted a charter by the counts of Montbéliard, who had owned the area since the 13th century.
In 1648, the Treaty of Westphalia, which ended the Thirty Years’ War, transferred Belfort to France. The military architect Vauban extended and developed the town’s fortifications for Louis XIV.
Before 1871, Belfort belonged to the department of Haut-Rhin in Alsace. During the Franco-Prussian war, the French successfully resisted the Siege of Belfort (between 3 November 1870 and 18 February 1871) until the garrison was ordered to surrender 21 days after the armistice with Prussia ended the war. Unlike the rest of Alsace, Prussia did not annex this region, and the territory was exchanged for parts near Metz. During this time, it formed the Territoire de Belfort, which still exists today. There is a monumental statue by Frédéric Bartholdi commemorating the siege. In the years following 1872, Alsatians who refused to live under German rule in annexed Alsace and wanted a French life and home in Belfort contributed significantly to Belfort and French industry (see Société Alsacienne de Constructions Mécaniques).

Lion of Belfort
The magnificent statue of a lion stands on an epic ledge beneath bluffs and a portion of the citadel wall. Frédéric Bartholdi made this work in 1880 to commemorate the siege of Belfort during the Franco-Prussian War. Belfort held out for 103 days despite a significant disadvantage in the workforce.

The Belfort Gap was shored up in the 1800s by a succession of French kings and then the Third Republic amid rising tensions with neighboring Prussia.
