In the Occitanie region of Southern France, Béziers is a subprefecture of the Hérault department. During the Béziers Fair, centered on bullfighting each August, Béziers is known as a bullfighting mecca. The five-day event attracts more than a million visitors.
History
One of the oldest cities in France is Béziers. According to research published in March 2013, Béziers dates from 575 BC, making it older than Agde (Greek Agathe Tyche, founded in 525 BC) and younger than Marseille (Greek Massalia, founded in 600 BC).
It has been occupied since Neolithic times, before the arrival of the Celts. Roman Betarra was located along the road that linked Provence with Iberia. The Romans founded Colonia Julia Baeterrae Septimanorum in 36–35 B.C. as a new colony for veterans. 3rd-century city walls were constructed with stones from the Roman arena.
There was a wine export from Beziers to Rome. In an excavation near Rome, one dolia was marked, “I am a wine from Baeterrae, and I am five years old.” Another marker was labeled “white wine of Baeterrae.” Béziers was conquered by the Muslims and remained part of Islamic Iberia between 720 and 752.
The Viscountship of Béziers was centered in Béziers from the 10th to the 12th century. Most of the coastal plain around Béziers, including Agde, was ruled by the viscounts. Additionally, they controlled the major east-west route through Languedoc, which roughly follows the old Roman Via Domitia with bridges over the Orb at Béziers and the Hérault at Saint-Thibéry.
After Viscount William’s death around 990, the Viscounty passed to his daughter Garsendis and her husband, Count Raimond-Roger of Carcassonne (d. c.1012). They were succeeded by their sons Peter-Raimond (d. c.1060) and Roger (d. 1067), who were also Counts of Carcassonne.
