Loir-et-Cher, a department in the center of France, has its capital in Blois, a hillside city on the Loire River. There is a late-Gothic cathedral towering over Blois’ cobblestone center. History
In 1959, a significant urban development uncovered the remains of a late Gallic settlement and an urban center from the Gallo-Roman period. In those days, the town was on the road connecting Chartres and Bourges. The Carnutes people lived in a network of cities that included Blois as a secondary settlement. A primarily developed town was found on the right bank between 2001 and 2016. The occupation was located on the left bank during the Gallic and Gallo-Roman periods based on excavations on the right bank between 2001 and 2016. Despite no evidence of a port, the Loire has been a major axis route throughout history. There are, however, remnants of former bridges connecting the two banks.
Charles VIII died in Château of Amboise without heirs in 1498. Duke Louis II of France has crowned King Louis XII of France due to running 22 miles between the Château and Blois. Queen Anne of Brittany, the widow of Charles VIII, married him in 1499. As a result of the birth of their daughter, Claude of France, Brittany and France were united. It was only natural for Louis XII to establish his court in Blois as the last hereditary Count of Blois. At Blois in 1504–1505, the Treaty of Blois was signed, temporarily ending the Italian Wars. His reign saw a massive redevelopment of the city, with some architectural elements inspired by the Italian Renaissance, as was evident in the conversion of a medieval castle into a château and the construction of many hôtels particuliers throughout the whole kingdom for nobility. An essential French minister under King Charles VIII, King Louis XII, and King Francis I, Florimond Robertet, built Hôtel d’Alluye as a copy of an Italian palace.
