Boulogne-Billancourt, Overview
It is located 8 km from the center of Paris, in Boulogne-Billancourt, a wealthy and prestigious commune. Boulogne-Billancourt is the largest arrondissement of Boulogne-Billancourt and is a subprefecture of Hauts-de-Seine.
Etymology
The commune was initially named Boulogne-sur-Seine (“Boulogne on the Seine”).
Before the 14th century, Boulogne was a small village called Menuls-lès-Saint-Cloud (meaning “Menuls near Saint-Cloud”). A church dedicated to the virgin of Boulogne-sur-Mer, then one of northern France’s most famous pilgrimage centers, was built in Menuls-lès-Saint-Cloud by King Philip IV of France in the 14th century. “Our Lady of Boulogne the Minor” is the name given to the church that is intended to become a pilgrimage center closer to Paris than Boulogne-sur-Mer. Boulogne-la-Petite, and later Boulogne-sur-Seine, were the names given to the village of Menuls-lès-Saint-Cloud over time.
History
The City of Paris was enlarged by annexing neighboring communes on 1 January 1860. As a result, Boulogne-Billancourt (then called Boulogne-sur-Seine) and the city of Paris disbanded the communes of Auteuil and Passy. Boulogne-sur-Seine received a small part of Passy’s territory and about half of Auteuil’s territory (including Billancourt, which was part of the disbanded commune of Auteuil).
Several shooting events took place in Boulogne-Billancourt during the 1900 Summer Olympics.
The Bois de Boulogne, previously divided between the communes of Boulogne-Billancourt and Neuilly-sur-Seine, was annexed by Paris in 1929. Boulogne-Billancourt, to which most of the Bois de Boulogne belonged, lost about half its territory on that occasion. The Seine surrounds Boulogne-Billancourt on its west, south, and east sides, while the 16th arrondissement of Paris borders it on its north and northeast sides.
Three major French industries were born in Boulogne-Billancourt. It was the site of the first aircraft factory, Appareils d’Aviation Les Frères Voisin, which many other aviation pioneers then followed. The tradition continues with several aviation-related companies still operating in the area.

Education
There are four public collèges (middle schools) in the commune: Jacqueline-Auriol, Bartholdi, Paul-Landowski, and Jean-Renoir. Lycée Jacques-Prévert and Lycée Polyvalent Étienne-Jules-Marey are the public high schools. The private school Groupe Scolaire Maïmonide Rambam provides instruction for children from early childhood through high school.
