Boulogne-sur-Mer Overview

A major fishing port on the north coast of France, Boulogne-sur-Mer is a city known for its fishing industry. An aquarium with thousands of marine species is located by the port of Nausicaá. The ornate crypt of Notre Dame Basilica is located in the fortified old town. This 12th-century belfry served as a castle’s keep during the Norman era. A 13th-century chateau houses the Castle Museum, which displays ancient Egyptian and Greek artifacts.

Name

Boulogne is derived from the Latin Bononia, the Roman name for Bologna. Both places – and Vindobona (Vienna) – are thought to derive from Celtic placenames, with bona potentially referring to “foundation,” “citadel,” or “granary.” This city is distinguished from Boulogne-Billancourt on the edge of Paris by the French epithet sur-Mer (“on the sea”). The Boulogne in Boulogne-Billancourt comes from a church dedicated to Notre-Dame de Boulogne, “Our Lady of Boulogne.”

History

Gesoriacum was founded by the Celtic Boii, known to the Romans as Gesoriacum. It was sometimes confused with Caesar’s Portus Itius, but it is now believed to be a site near Calais that has since silted up. Around 39 AD, Caligula ordered the construction of a tall lighthouse at Gesoriacum, possibly to prepare for an invasion of Britain. When the Tour d’Ordre fell into the sea in 1644, coastal erosion caused it to collapse.

Gesoriacum was the main port connecting Britain to the rest of the empire after Claudius’s invasion in A.D. 43. Until the revolt of its admiral Carausius in 286, it was the principal base of the Roman navy’s Britannic fleet. In 293, Constantius Chlorus successfully besieged the city by land and sea as part of the imperial response. Between the sack of Gesoriacum and 310, the settlement’s name was changed to Bononia, perhaps due to its refounding or another nearby community replacing the sacked city.

At the end of the 4th century, Zosimus called it Germanorum (“German-speaking”) because it was an important town for the Morini (the sea people).

Location

Boulogne-sur-Mer is located in northern France on the edge of the English Channel and the mouth of the river “Liane.” Boulogne is located about 30 kilometers (19 miles) from Calais, 50 kilometers (31 miles) from Folkestone, 100 kilometers (62 miles) from Lille and Amiens, 150 kilometers (93 miles) from Rouen and London, and 215 kilometers (134 miles) from Paris.

Transport

Boulogne is accessible by the A16 motorway (Paris-Amiens-Calais-Dunkerque). Metropolitan bus services are provided by “Marinéo.”

In the south of the city, there is a railway station called Boulogne-Ville, one of the most important. Regional trains use the station at Boulogne-Tintelleries.

Since LD Lines closed the route to Dover in 2010, Boulogne no longer has cross-channel ferry services.

Population

42,366 (2015)

Climate

The climate in Boulogne-sur-Mer is oceanic, with cold winters not exceeding freezing and mild summers tempered by the sea. Its location makes it quite complicated compared with locations on England’s east and south coasts. In addition to having more precipitation than southern English locations, it also has a higher temperature.

Economy

Boulogne-sur-Mer is a major fishing port, with 7,000 residents dependent on fishing for their livelihood.

In Boulogne Port, IFREMER (the French Research Institute for Exploitation of the Sea) and Pasteur Institute are located.

In 1991, the Saint-Louis building opened on the former St. Louis Hospital site, whose front entrance remains a dominant architectural feature of the university’s Boulogne campus. Its six significant specializations are Modern Languages, French Literature, Sport, Law, History, and Economics. Located about 5 minutes from the Boulogne Tintelleries railway station, the university is in the town center.

Health

There are two hospitals in Boulogne, the public Hospital Duchenne and the private Clinique de la côte d’opale.

Sports

Founded in 1898, the U.S. Boulogne Côte d’Opale football club is one of the oldest in France due to its proximity to England. Stade de la Libération seats 14,500 people and hosts a match in the third tier, the Championnat National. The club is where Franck Ribéry began his career as a Boulogne native and FIFA World Cup finalist.

Stade Olympique Maritime Boulonnais and ESSM Le Portel play basketball in Boulogne (first-tier professional men’s basketball league in France).

Why is Boulogne sur Mer famous?

You probably know a lot about Boulogne sur Mer: its marine life, its port, its fish market, its city center, Nausicaa, the largest aquarium in Europe… but you probably don’t know everything about it! The city of Boulogne has been shaped by 2000 years of history.

Is Boulogne sur Mer worth visiting?

Boulogne has a fortified old town, which is well worth a visit, even though it has around 43,000 people and is France’s largest fishing port. Since the city’s cobbled streets and traditional French places will be empty, this is the best time to see the city’s sights.

Beffroi de Boulogne-sur-Mer

Musée de Boulogne-sur-Mer

La Maison de la Beurière

Boulogne was once the port’s fisherman’s quarter and was situated near the water across from Nausicaa.

La Plage

Boulogne’s sandy beach, attracting bathers since the 1830s, stretches between Nausicaa and the yachting club.

Fish Market

Catch the fishermen unloading their trawlers at 7.00, and stroll around the stalls where 70 varieties of fish and seafood are on sale, and you can pick up live crabs and lobsters to inspect.

Opal Coast

Boulogne is located right along the Opal Coast, which runs north and south of the city. Known for its widescreen sandy beaches, dunes, and giant cliffs capped with wildflowers such as thrift and sea pink in spring, this natural park is one of the most beautiful places on earth.
