Bourges Overview

The half-timbered houses of Bourges are a significant attraction in this city. The Gothic-style Bourges Cathedral features stained-glass windows from the 13th century. The ornate Jacques Coeur Palace was the home of a nobleman in the 15th century. A mummy from Egypt, agricultural tools, and bronzes from Etruscan times are among the exhibits at the Musée du Berry. At the Natural History Museum, exhibits on evolution are among the highlights.

History

Bituriges, the original inhabitants, or Burg (French: bourg; Spanish: Burgo; English, others: burgh, berg, or borough) are the Germanic terms for “hill” or “village.” Avaricon was the city’s name used by the Celts; Latin speakers used Avaricum. During the time of Caesar, a Gallic (Celtic) confederacy dominated the area around it in the fourth century B.C.

As the Gauls attempted to deny Caesar’s forces supplies during the sixth year of the Gallic Wars, the inhabitants of Avaricum begged not to be burned. In addition to good defenses provided by surrounding marshes, a river that nearly encircled it, and a solid southern wall, it was temporarily spared. Although Julius Caesar’s forces killed all but 800 people in the town, the city was still captured and destroyed.

Avaricum was reconstructed as a Roman town with a monumental gate, aqueducts, thermae, and a theater; it reached a more significant size than it would get during the Middle Ages. Some of the stone re-used from earlier public buildings was used to build the massive walls surrounding the late-Roman town, encompassing 40 hectares.

The town’s first bishop was Saint Ursinus, also called Saint Ursin, who lived in the third century A.D. The archbishopric of Bourges is located in the city. During the 8th century, Bourges lay on the northern fringes of the Duchy of Aquitaine and was, therefore, the first to be attacked by the Franks when they crossed the Loire. In 731, Charles Martel captured the city, but Duke Odo, the Great of Aquitaine, immediately retook it. Up until the destructive siege by the Frankish King Pepin the Short in 762, when Basque troops were found defending the town along with its count, it remained under the rule of counts who pledged allegiance to the Aquitanian dukes.

Geography

Bourges sits where the Auron flows into the Yèvre. Through Bourges, the disused Canal de Berry follows the course of the Auron.

Population

Sport and recreation

The Bourges Football 18 is Bourges’ top football team. It is also the home of the women’s basketball club CJM Bourges Basket, which has won multiple titles domestically and in Europe. The Bourges XV is the premier rugby team in the region, currently playing in the French National Division, Federal 3.

Is Bourges worth visiting?

With its UNESCO World Heritage cathedral and timbered old town, Bourges in Central France is easily explored over a weekend.

What is Bourges known for?

One of the best cathedrals in France is the cathedral in Bourges, which lies on the fringes of the historic town center. As well as being the birthplace of Jacques Coeur, Bourges was once the capital of Aquitaine.

Best Things to Do in Bourges (France)

Bourges Cathedral

Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Bourges Cathedral is a masterpiece on several levels. As there is no transept between the nave and the choir, you might first notice the lack of a transept.

Cathedral Tower and Crypt

Although you have to pay a small fee to see these parts of the cathedral, you won’t regret it. The Tour de Buerre (Butter Tower) has 400 steps, but you’ll find a panoramic view of the Bourges at the top.

Old Town

The fire in 1487 destroyed a third of Bourges and stunted its development by losing its annual fairs to Troyes and Lyon.

Palais Jacques-Cœur

Though it was built before the Loire Valley’s extravagant Renaissance castles, its carvings are no less elegant and elaborate.

Jardin de l’Archevêché

Featuring boxwood topiaries trimmed to sharp points, lime trees shaped like globes, and formal lawns and flowerbeds surrounded by paths in a familiar French style.

Marais de Bourges

During Julius Caesar’s conquest of Gaul in 52BC, this boggy countryside slowed his advance. Around the 8th century, humans began controlling the marshes, and by the 17th century, they had been drained and crisscrossed with water channels.

Musée du Berry

In 1891, the Musée du Berry was relocated from the Palais Jacques-Curi to this location. Almost 200 years have passed since it was built, and it has amassed a fascinating collection of mosaics, ceramics, and statues.

Musée Estève

There could hardly be a more fitting home for the museum dedicated to the artist Maurice Estève of the 20th century. Hôtel des Échevins (House of the Aldermen), a Gothic mansion with elaborate stonework on the tower, is the building.

Les Nuits Lumière

From June to September, the town’s most beautiful Gothic and Renaissance landmarks are illuminated with magnificent projections. It is part of a walk that combines ethereal images with music and sheds new light on Bourges and its past at the Cathedral, Jardin de l’Archevêché and Hôtel des Échevins Palais.

Promenade des Remparts

Avaricum (Gallo-Roman Bourges) became the capital of the Aquitaine Premièr province in the 4th century, controlling much of southwestern France. In what is now Bourges’ upper town, the city constructed a new system of walls, gates, and towers to defend itself.
