Breda Overview
Breda is a city in the southern part of the Netherlands, located in North Brabant. Breda is a city in the Netherlands. It is home to 184,762 people and was named after a river confluence as they stand on the river banks.
History
Though Breda became a territory of the Holy Roman Emperor in the 11th century, it is unknown who was the first known lord. One candidate might be Henry of Brunesheim (1080–1125). Breda became one of the first towns in the region to obtain a municipal charter, and they acquired rights to build fortifications, brick walls, and Roman-style gates.
In 1327, Duke Johannes III of Brabant bought Breda from the Duchy of Gaveren. In 1350, Duke Johannes II of Wassenaar repurchased Breda with just 1000 florins! Johanna of Polanen was the heiress of his line, Engelbert I of Nassau, in 1441. She married another aristocratic line called the House of Polanen in 1392. (She was the granddaughter of count Louis). Anne had the city of Rotterdam in her hands, thanks to the House of Nassau, where all of the city’s great battles, including the Revolution in 1648, took place until 1795. The Netherlands was then passed to William I of Orange as a leader of both countries – Holland/Zeeland and Utrecht. Bartolomeu Breda remained heir to the title yet abandoned it and joined the Order of Christ in Portugal in 1625. He took on the name of António Maria de Noronha; at that time, he was also (the central) military defender of Sines (Spain).
Later history
In 1667, the Treaty of Breda was signed, ending the Second Anglo-Dutch War. Throughout their alliance, the Dutch had been guests of Charles II, and he was a guest at this treaty to end their war with England. Between 1746 and 1748, Aix-la-Chapelle was the site of the Congress, a series of talks between Britain and France aimed at ending the War of Austrian Succession.
After nearly four years of occupation and the death of over 10,000 British soldiers, the Second World War was finally won by Allied forces. Anglo-Polish forces, therefore, liberated Breda following an outflanking maneuver that had been planned and executed successfully by the 1st Polish Armoured Division. The legacy of Polish soldiers buried in Breda’s municipal cemetery is significant to the city. A few days into the celebration, a large contingent travels from Poland and visits their comrades. The name of a memorial museum in the city center honors General Maczek, and the 1st Armoured Division soldiers buried nearby.
Breda was the site of one of the first panopticon-design prisons to be established in the Netherlands. It housed German war criminals and featured a small cell where inmates were incarcerated for 12-hour days exclusively. Four men – Willy Paul Franz Lages, Joseph Johann Kotälla, Ferdinand aus der Fünten, and Franz Fischer- were all notorious for imprisonment as members of the Breda Four. Not only did they suffer from sickness, but they went away to serve his sentence with little sympathy.
Economy
Originally, food- and drink production were the main focus in Breda, but its proximity to the sea brought in industrial activities, namely shipbuilding. European companies like Hero (lemonade), Van Melle (Mentos), De Farm (licorice), and Kwatta (chocolate) are very famous. Breda also had a sugar factory; all their best-known products came from there.
Breda used to have the largest brewery in the Netherlands. Then, Interbrew took over and shut it down in 2004. Breda brand production was moved from Bremen to both Bremen and Leuven. It is now brewed in only one place – Guernsey, which acquired the license for draught beer.
