Brest Overview
Brittany’s port city, Brest, is bisected by the Penfeld river in northwestern France. Known for its rich maritime history and naval base, it is well known for its maritime heritage. The National Navy Museum, housed in the medieval Château de Brest, is located at the mouth of the Penfeld. Tour Tanguy, a medieval tower, is located across the river. Oceanopolis aquarium and the National Botanical Conservatory are situated to the northeast.
History
Bresta was first recorded as Bresta; it may be derived from *brigs, a Celtic word for “hill.”
Before 1240, when Harvey V, Lord of Léon, ceded Brest to John I, Duke of Brittany, little is known about Brest. In 1342, John IV, Duke of Brittany, surrendered Brest to the English, who held it until 1397. : 102 Brest was so important in medieval times that the saying, “The Duke of Brittany is not the Lord of Brest if he is not the Duke of Brittany.” It was in 1491 that Francis I of France married Claude, the daughter of Anne of Brittany, and the definitive overlordship of Brest – along with the rest of the duchy – was transferred to the French crown.
Brest’s position as a seaport town was recognized by Cardinal Richelieu in 1631 when he built wooden wharves for its harbor. As soon as the French Navy arrived, this became a base. The piers were rebuilt in masonry under Jean-Baptiste Colbert, finance minister under Louis XIV. The Vauban fortifications were constructed between 1680 and 1688. Throughout the 18th century, these fortifications and the town’s naval significance continued to grow.
An English squadron soundly defeated Brest under Lord Berkeley in 1694.
Brest served as the disembarking port for many American troops during the First World War, and many of these men came through the port to the front lines. On 13 February 1918, the United States Navy established a naval air station to operate seaplanes. The base ceased operations as soon as the Armistice was signed on 11 November 1918.
Geography
Brest is located at the west end of Brittany near the entrance to the natural rade de Brest (Brest roadstead).
Located at the edge of a magnificent landlocked bay, on the slopes of two hills separated by the Penfeld River, it occupies the slopes of two hills. The left bank of Brest is known as Brest proper, while the right bank is called Recouvrance. In addition to the town, there are extensive suburbs in the east. Some of the hillsides are steep enough to require flights of steps to ascend from the lower to the upper city, and the second or third story of one house is often level with the ground floor of the next.

Due to its location in the Atlantic Ocean and the sea intrusion, Brest experiences an oceanic climate (Köppen: Cfb) where it shares a considerable moderation with other places of Finistère and Great Britain. Because of the maritime moderation, Brest has very chilly summers by French standards, and July afternoons are cooler than in far northern Europe despite its low latitude. Snowfall is rare during winter nights since temperatures usually remain above freezing. Rainfall occurs year-round, but snowfall is rare during winter nights.
