Brive-la-Gaillarde Overview
The town of Brive-la-Gaillarde is located in southwest France. The Georges Brassens Hall hosts a large food market three times a week. Now a museum focusing on the wartime period occupies the former home of WWII Resistance activist Edmond Michelet. Tapestries from Mortlake and Aubusson are displayed at the Labenche Art and History Museum. The neo-Romanesque bell tower of St. Martin’s Collegiate Church dates back to the 12th century.
History
Although the inhabitants settled around the 1st century, the city only began to grow much later. During the 5th century, the original town developed around a church dedicated to Saint-Martin-l’Espagnol. Walls surrounded the city during the 12th century, and a second wall was constructed during the Hundred Years’ War. Those fortifications are no longer present and have been replaced by boulevards.
The commune was initially named “Brive” but was renamed “Brive-la-Gaillarde” in 1919. In the name of the city, “Gaillarde” (still used in French today) probably signifies bravery or strength, but the word also refers to the city’s walls. In addition to its original boundaries, Brive now extends into Malemort and Ussac.
As a regional capital during World War II, Brive-la-Gaillarde was home to several clandestine information networks and several of the principal resistance movements, including the Armée secrète (or “Secret Army”) and the Mouvements Unis de la Résistance (or “United Movements of the Resistance”).
During the Occupied French War, Brive-la-Gaillarde was the first city to be liberated by its means on 15 August 1944. A military decoration, the “Croix de guerre 1939-1945,” was awarded to the city for its efforts.
There are many retail shops and cafes in the city’s medieval center. Besides the city hall, it is also home to the central police station, the Labenche museum, and the main police station. The Pont Cardinal, a bridge that used to be a crossing point between Paris and Toulouse, is a notable landmark outside the inner city.
