Bruges Overview
Bruges is a municipality in the Flemish Province of West Flanders in Belgium. The city is most notable for its historic buildings, medieval canals, and port. It’s also an important center for fishing and European trade. Along the way to the city hall, you’ll find Markt square with its 47 bells and 83-story tower. Area
The area of Zeebrugge includes 1,075 hectares of the coast. The historic city center, located in the heart of North Jakarta, is a prominent World Heritage Site of UNESCO that was designed based on Central Asian architecture and Portuguese influences. Etymology
The first mention of a settlement in the area was found in AD 840–875, but for many centuries, the place went by different names. Afterward, the word appears as Bruciam and Bruociam (892); as Brutgis uico (late 9th century); as in portu Bruggensi (c. 1010); as Bruggis (1012). As Bricge (in the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle), 1037; As Brugensis, 1046; As Brycge (in the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle), 1049–1052; As Brugias, 1072; As Bruggas, c. 1084; As Bruggis, 1089: And as Brug.
Some speculations about the name of Amsterdam go back to its etymology. They are named after a mix of multiple fords and brooks in the area, which later became a single word. However, it is unclear which word the word “Amsterdam” derives from. The spelling variant would be the southern Dutch variety. The word Bridge is a Dutch take on an English word that came from an earlier Germanic that means “embankment.”
Origins
Bruges is located on the south bank of the canal Dijver. Its coastline and settlement are from prehistory. As soon as the Romans conquered the Menapii in Bruges, they had to build a fortification because of pirates. These first ones were built during Julius Caesar‘s conquest in the 1st century BC and later expanded. Franks migrated to the region and began expanding their territory in the early 4th century. When Viking incursions put them in danger, they persisted in reinforcing their fortifications. Eventually, it started becoming a central part of Northern Europe during the ninth century when Baldwin became the count of Flanders and workers made it easier for travelers by creating a new road. Excavations in Burgh terrain in the 9th and 10th centuries lead to the discovery of a fortified settlement and church.

In short, Bruges has a temperate climate with four seasons spanning the whole year. It’s not easy to say when the best time to visit would be but probably the best time is during summer (July and August) or in April when the city comes to life after a long winter. The climate can vary depending on the season. Unlike in some places where spring is cold and autumn is warm, here summer brings warm weather, and the temperature drops only at night. In winter, the temperatures drop a few degrees during the day.”
During the month of June, July and August, you’re most likely to experience good weather with average temperatures between 20°C (68°F) and 25°C (77°F).
Climate

This UNESCO World Heritage Site has retained its medieval architecture, making it one of the best preserved in the world. Bruges is known as one of the most romantic and beautiful medieval towns in Europe with a prime location along a vast waterway. One of its medieval buildings is the Church of Our Lady, whose brick spire reaches 115.6 m (379.27 ft), making it the world’s second-highest brick tower/building. Michelangelo’s sculpture The Madonna and Child, which can be seen in the transept, is the only one of its kind to have left Italy during his lifetime. It has been estimated to be worth up to $131 million.
The Belfry of Bruges, which is independent of the UNESCO world heritage site in Bruges, is beautiful and adorned with intricate designs. The city still employs a full-time carillonneur, who gives free concerts on a regular basis.

It was brought from the Second Crusade by Thierry of Alsace after being discovered in Jerusalem in 1147. 1,600 people participate in the medieval procession which takes place every year. The knights and crusaders from times gone by would pace the path with their swords drawn.
Other religious landmarks and museums in the city include the Church of Our Lady, English Conplace, Jerusalem Church, Saint Salvator’s Cathedral, St. Trudo’s Abbey, Ten Wijngaerde Béguinage (Dutch: Begijnhof), and Ter Doest Abbey (Dutch: Abdij Ter Doest) in Lisse.
Transport
Road – Bruges has motorway connections from almost all directions
Railway – Bruges’ main railway station is the focus of lines to all major Belgian cities. It features direct trains to Lille, France, and several others. It also has a significant number of local and regional routes available.
Air – Brussels is centrally located and boasts the best connections for travelers. If you’re looking for more connection options, consider traveling to the Ostend-Bruges International Airport in Ostend (around 25 kilometers from Bruges), which offers limited direct routes. The new direct bus line from Brussels to Bruges will start soon and will be the most sustainable form of transportation.
Public city transport – Bruges has a lot of bus lines that go in and out of the city center and offer transportation through the surrounding region.
In support of municipal traffic management, the municipal council provides free public transport. However, if you don’t have a car and are struggling to find parking close to where you need it, there is always a car park near the main railway station.
Cycling – Cars are required to yield to pedestrians and cyclists. Continual plans exist under the idea of transitioning Bruges into an entirely car-free city or restricting traffic in an even more controlled way than it is currently. These plans have been pushed back repeatedly, but there’s no denying widespread support for these ideas in Bruges. Since 2005 changes were made for cyclists, which allowed two-way traffic on more roads. However, car traffic has been steadily increasing and is now over 80% of the total traffic in the city. Despite this increase, there are still thousands of people riding their bikes around Manchester and other cities throughout the region every day.
Port – The port of Bruges is called Zeebrugge which you’ll notice with the “on-Sea” suffix.
Sports
Between 1998 and 2016, Bruges hosted the start of the annual Tour of Flanders cycle race, held in April and one of the biggest sporting events in Belgium.
Sports like football are popular in Bruges, there’s a professional football club and two amateur teams. One of these is currently the national champions, it’s Club Brugge K.V., the other team is Cercle Brugge K.S.V. Both Club Brugge teams play their home games at the Jan Breydel Stadium in Sint-Andries (30,000 seats). They have plans to build a new stadium with 43,214 seats closer to the north of the city and renovate it.
In 2000, Bruges was one of the eight cities in Europe and two countries that hosted the UEFA European Football Championships. The 2020 UCI Road Cycling World Championships will be organized in the Netherlands, which is a prime location for bike-related events.
Education
Bruges is an important center for education in West Flanders, as well as being home to a number of primary and secondary schools. Go to Hospital
The Hospital St Jans Museum is a couple of centuries old and was restored in the recent past to keep it alive. It features original artwork and timber roof beams that are rare in today’s modern world, as well as many other works of art dating all the way back to the 15th Century. The oak reliquary is said to be one of the most beautiful pieces in the museum, showcasing an incredibly intricate gilded design. See Christ’s Blood
Catholic worshippers visit the Heilig-Bloedbasiliek each year, which is said to once have been home to a phial of blood from Jesus Christ. Just a small number of people are able to enter this church and view the phial, which holds religious importance. The phial is displayed in a decorative case at the museum, but the security guard lets visitors view it for 2 hours every day. It also displays other items such as a crown that once belonged to Mary of Burgundy. The building was constructed in the 12th century, making it one of the oldest still-standing structures in Belgium, and currently serves as a museum on lower floors. It is also known locally as the ‘Blue Tower’.
Stare up at the Belfort
The Belfort Tower in Bruges is 83 meters tall, reaching the sky and even towering over some of the smaller buildings in the city. It is a perfect place to photograph because it’s visible from just about anywhere you go, especially by boat. The upper floors are a great place to take in the view of the city. This is a beautiful tower with a stunning 360-degree view of the city. With just 70 people allowed in at once, you may wait in line on other busy days. At the entrance, look for signs that tell you when you can enter again.
See the Church of Our Lady
To date, the only work by Michelangelo that remains from inside the Church of Our Lady is a statue of Mary holding Jesus called “Madonna and Child”. This piece attracts visitors from around the globe who want to view one of Michelangelo’s most famous art pieces. There are several other less-known but equally impressive pieces of art in the church which mainly date from the 15th century. The tombs of Charles the Bold and his daughter are crafted out of bronze and stone and would be worth seeing.

This church in St Anna is one of the strangest churches in the city. It was built by Adorne’s family who was very religious people based on a Holy Sepulchre, which is considered to be one of the most important shrines in Jerusalem. The altarpiece at the church is covered in skulls and also has a replica of Jesus Christ’s corpse in the urn. The tomb is empty because Anselm Adornes’ heart was bought by someone after he was killed, according to legend. This church is one of the spookiest ones in the city of Bruges.
Admire the Stadhuis
The Bruge Town Hall has been around for hundreds of years, making it one of the most popular buildings in the city. It is not only beautiful but also creepy with its roofs and slitted windows. Inside you can also find statues of countesses who lived in Fla during different periods. I was greeted by the exquisite Gothic Hallway, with its abundant artwork, before going to the top of the staircase where I saw stunning ceilings and murals.
Take a trip to the Kasteel Van Loppem
Kasteel Van Loppem is a great option for vacationers looking to explore northern Belgium. It’s more of a mansion than anything resembling a castle and it’s just on the outskirts of Bruges. The Belgian royal castle was built in the 19th century and has a lot to offer. The castle received some upgrades after the First World War ended and became home to the King until 1924. It also served as a command center for Belgium’s army during that time. It’s surrounded by beautiful gardens and is absolutely worth checking out!
