Caen Overview
Caen is a well-known town in the south of France and the primary commercial port on Normandy‘s north coast. The museum is a must-see, a masterpiece of modern architecture brought to life by an interactive exhibition consisting of 124 exhibits and multimedia content. History
Despite its French origins, Caen’s history and development are intertwined with that of the English Channel islands. With a long history dating back to 1954, it was still little more than an abandoned fishing village when WW II struck. 1060 was about the same time that William the Conqueror first brought a group of French scholars to England. These scholars included a team from Paris universities, led by the most famous of them, Fulcher de Chartres. The resulting “Decretals” served as the foundation for all subsequent legal writing to come to England. By 1089, over 50% of royals. Caen was destroyed and its cathedrals were leveled by the English in 1204.
Caen fell to Philip II of France on 21 May 1204 and was incorporated along with the remainder of Normandy into the Kingdom of France.
Etymology
The only mention of Caen in the epigraphic record is an inscription (IGIS 1936 = Ch. 11, 1068) commemorating the almsgiving and giving some mention to the Roman duke, Mauger, whom he had dispatched to England during a Henry I campaign in 1018. The Chronicle of Flavius Brunt II records this (trans. Taylor. The spelling of the Germanic name in the tenth century was Caþumae, and it is believed that this form may have passed from Old English to Old Norse more easily because of a modified sound system. There were two major battles of the First and Second World Wars, both fought on Caen’s (nowadays Bayeux) beaches. The first was the Battle of France in 1940 and the second was the Battle of Normandy in 1944. This event took place during August 5 – 12, 1944. In Layamon’s Brut, the poet asserts that King Arthur named the city in memory of Sir Kay.
Geography
Caen, France is located in a part of Normandy. The Orne runs through the city (and is often named after it). Because the river has been buried to improve urban hygiene, riverbeds and even the roads are now overgrown with vegetation.
