Calais Overview

Calais is a port city in Pas-de-Calais, a subprefecture of the department. Arras, the prefecture of Pas-de-Calais, is the third-largest city in the department despite Calais being its largest city. 72,929 people live in the city proper, and 149,673 are in the urban area.

History

There needs to be more evidence of early habitation in the area. Caletum was the name given to the settlement by the Romans. Due to Calais’ strategic location, Julius Caesar mustered 800 to 1,000 sailing boats, five legions, and some 2,000 horses to attack Britannia. It remained an island surrounded by marshes, making it almost impossible to attack from the land for many centuries. An early medieval fishing village on a sandy beach backed by pebbles and a creek near the river Aa’s estuary on the west edge, it would have been a Dutch-speaking settlement before the 10th century. Due to the expansion of the pebble and sand ridge eastward from Calais, the haven behind it gradually developed into a fen as the estuary filled with silt and peat. As a result, canals were cut between Saint-Omer, previously at the head of the estuary, and Calais, Gravelines, and Dunkirk, respectively, on the newly formed coast. The Count of Boulogne built a fortification in 1224 after the Count of Flanders improved in 997 Calais.

It was in 1181 that Mathieu d’Alsace, Count of Boulogne, granted Gerard de Guelders a charter that mentions the existence of this community. Calais thus became part of the county of Boulogne. A document documents Richard the Lionheart’s arrival at Calais in 1189 as he embarked on the Third Crusade.

Calais jungle, the nickname given to a series of makeshift camps in the vicinity of Calais, has become home to an increasing number of illegal immigrants and asylum seekers since 1999. They resided there while waiting for the French asylum system to process their asylum claims or as they tried to stow away on lorries, ferries, cars, or trains. In addition to asylum seekers, they came from underdeveloped or conflict-ridden countries in Africa and Asia, such as Darfur, Afghanistan, Syria, Iraq, and Eritrea.

Economy

Historically, London has been an important port because of its proximity to England. Between Dover and Calais, the vast majority of Channel crossings are made between England and France. The companies that operate from Calais include SeaFrance (currently in liquidation), DFDS Seaways, and P&O Ferries. Channel Tunnel’s French end is located in Coquelles, some 4 miles (6.4 km) west of Calais. There are direct rail links between Calais and Paris, 148 miles (238 km) away. Calais receives over 10 million visitors each year.

Sport

Calais’ association football team is Calais RUFC, which competes in the National Championship. There is a rugby club in Calais called Amicale Rugby Calaisien. Basketball teams Calais Basket (males) and COB Calais (females) are prevalent in Calais, as are volleyball teams Lis Calais (males) and Stella Calais (females). A range of sports is also offered at the SOC club, including athletics, handball, and football, as well as yachting at Yacht Club de Calais. There is also an American football team in Calais called Les Seagulls.

Transport

  • Sea – Calais is France’s largest passenger traffic port and the first cable ship port in Europe.
  • Rail – In addition to the large port, there are three railway stations in the town: Gare de Calais-Fréthun, Gare de Calais-Ville, and Gare des Fontinettes, the latter being the first Eurostar stop in mainland Europe.
  • Road – STCE provides local bus transportation.
  • Air – There is an airport and an airfield in Calais.

What is Calais, France, known for?

A cliff-lined section of the northern French coast parallels the British white cliffs and is part of the same geological formation as Calais’ Côte d’Opale (Opal Coast). Among its scenic cliffs are Cape Blanc Nez and Cape Gris Nez, while its dunes cover a large area.

Is Calais worth visiting?

Calais is often overlooked in a rush to catch a cross-channel ferry, but it’s well worth a visit – especially when the dragon is in town. Dover, its counterpart on the other side of the channel, feels positively stagnant. Calais, however, feels positively booming.
