Located in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region in eastern France, Caluire-et-Cuire is a commune within the Metropolis of Lyon. Lyon is situated 4 kilometers north-by-east of Lyon, making it its fifth-largest suburb.

- Road transport – Lyon ring road (passing through Caluire tunnel) provides quick access to the A43 and A42 motorways without an interchange, and then the A6 via a toll road.
- Rail transport – There were several stations in Caluire-et-Cuire, notably on the Lyon-Croix-Rousse – Trévoux line, which has now been neutralized and transferred to Sathonay-Rillieux.
- Subway – Croix-Rousse and the north of the Lyon peninsula are served by Line C of the Lyon Metro.

Toponymy
Caluire-et-Cuire is the official name of the commune, but it is often referred to as Caluire.
History
The Gros Caillou in the nearby Croix-Rousse district of Lyon indicates that the region was once a vast glacier; mammoth tusks were discovered in the nearby Sathonay quarries near La Grille in Caluire.
Around Lugdunum, Roman military colonists settled after conquering Gaul. In line with a tradition anchored in the sources, there was a Roman colonist named Calvirius and a Roman colonist named Curius who settled nearby. According to caluirarde historian Maryannick Lavigne-Louis, Caluire comes from the word corridor, which means “ditch, irrigation channel” and has nothing to do with Roman or Latin names.
Marcus Vipsanius Agrippa set up a star network around Lugdunum, the way of the Rhine, in the wake of the current rue de Cuire, which crosses the territory. In the direction of Miribel, another route is assumed along the right bank of the Rhône, along the balmes. The Sarrasinières, long associated with Lyon’s ancient aqueducts, can be reached from this gallery.
