Cannes is known for its international film festival, which takes place every year on the French Riviera. The Boulevard de la Croisette, which curves along the coast, is lined with palatial hotels, upmarket boutiques, and sandy beaches. A red carpet and Allée des Étoiles – Cannes’ walk of fame – can also be found in the Palais des Festivals et des Congrès.
In the 2nd century B.C., the Ligurian Oxybii established a settlement here called Aegitna (Ancient Greek: Αἴγιτνα). The name is unclear to historians, and it served as a port of call between the Lérins Islands as a fishing village.
A violent but short conflict broke out between the troops of Quintus Opimius and the Oxybii in 154 BC.
Canua was the name of the town in the 10th century. Possibly, the name derives from the Latin word “canna,” which means reed. Canua was probably once a small Ligurian port, and later a Roman outpost on Le Suquet hill, as indicated by Roman tombs found there. The city, now known as Le Suquet, was once surrounded by swamps, home to an 11th-century tower. The history of Cannes is closely linked to the account of the Lérins Islands, where much ancient activity took place, especially protection.
During the Saracen invasion of 891 and their stay until the end of the 10th century, Canua was devastated by the Saracens. Monks were forced to settle on the mainland, at the Suquet, because of the insecurity of the Lérins islands. The city of Cannes was fortified by a castle built in 1035, and two towers were built on the islands of Lérins at the end of the 11th century. A century was needed to create one.
Cannes became independent around 1530 when it separated from the monks who had controlled it for hundreds of years.
The Spanish and British tried to gain control over the Lérins Islands during the 18th century, but the French chased them away. Several people later controlled the islands, including Jean-Honoré Alziary and the Bishop of Fréjus. In the middle of the 19th century, one served as a hospital for Crimean War soldiers.
The climate of Cannes is subtropical Mediterranean (Köppen climate classification Csa), with 11 hours of daylight per day during summer (July) and mild conditions during winter (December to February). Relatively low rainfall is seen during both seasons, with most rain falling in October and November.

The Palais des Festivals et des Congrès is where the Cannes Film Festival is held. The building was designed by Bennett and Druet and was completed in 1982. It hosts events, conferences, concerts, and festivals throughout the year.
The Eglise Notre-Dame de l’Espérance is the most important church in Cannes. It’s located at the top of Le Suquet, which provides dreamy views of the city. On the high altar of this late-Gothic tower from the 16th century is a 17th-century Madonna.
Located on a hill overlooking the Bay of Cannes, the museum occupies a medieval castle, formerly the monastery of Lérins monks, and a Romanesque chapel (the 13th-century Chapelle Sainte-Anne).
Cannes is known for its fine sandy beaches and calm Mediterranean waters, ideal for swimming. Cannes has seven kilometers of beach property, including the nearby îles de Lérin and Estérel coastline.
There are several stylish private beaches along the Boulevard de la Croisette (those charge entrance fees), including Croisette Beach, which has a trendy “bistronomic” restaurant serving Mediterranean cuisine made from local ingredients, and CBeach, which is equipped with showers, changing rooms, and a stylish restaurant.
Below the historic Le Suquet quarter, the Vieux Port (Old Port) is a perfect example of Cannes’ Mediterranean scenery. In 1957, the Gare Maritime (Marine Railway Station) was built near the Vieux Port, also known as Port Cannes I.
