Carcassonne Overview

Its medieval citadel, La Cité, is one of the most famous sights in Carcassonne, a hilltop town in southern France’s Languedoc region. Built initially during Gallo-Roman times, the walls were greatly expanded during the 13th and 14th centuries. It offers archaeological exhibits and tours of the inner ramparts of Château Comtal, a 12th-century castle in the heart of the Cité.

Geography

Carcassonne is located about 80 kilometers (50 miles) east of Toulouse in the south of France. Since the Neolithic era, its strategic location between the Atlantic and Mediterranean Seas has been recognized.

There are numerous small towns in the department of Aude, but this town is significantly larger at 65 km2. The city is located on the banks of the Aude, Fresquel, and Canal du Midi rivers.

History

Settlement in this region dates back to about 3500 BC, but Carsac became an important trading site in the sixth century B.C. The Celtic place name Carsac can also be found at other sites in the south. It was fortified and made into an oppidum, a hill fort, by the Volcae Tectosages, which is why it was named “Carsac.”

Despite being memorialized in a neo-Gothic sculpture of Mme, the folk etymology involves:

  • A châtelaine named Lady Carcas.
  • A ruse that succeeded in ending a siege.
  • The joyful ringing of bells (“Carcas sona”).

It is a modern invention to place Carcas on a column near the Narbonne Gate, and names derived from Caracas can be used for this purpose.

As a result of the Romans fortifying the hilltop around 100BC, Carcassonne became known as Julia Carsaco, later Carcaso, and eventually Carcasum (by swapping consonants called metathesis). Gallo-Roman influences can be seen in the northern ramparts’ central part of the lower courses. Having held Carcassonne since 453, the Visigothic king Theodoric II officially seized Septimania 462 from the Romans. There are still traces of his fortifications at Carcassonne, a frontier post on the northern marches.

A basilica dedicated to Saint Nazaire is believed to have been begun by Theodoric. As a result, the Visigoths were able to repel the attacks of the Frankish king Clovis in 508. Saracens took Carcassonne from Barcelona in 725. They were driven away by Pepin the Short (Pépin le Bref) in 759–760.

During the medieval period, Carcassonne and its surroundings were controlled by a medieval fiefdom known as the county of Carcassonne. Razès was often united with this county. Carcassonne probably originated with local Visigoths, but the first count known by name was Bello during Charlemagne’s reign. The Bellonids ruled Septimania and Catalonia for three centuries after Bello founded his dynasty.

Climate

There is a humid subtropical climate in Carcassonne (Köppen climate classification: Cfa), though there is a noticeable Mediterranean climate influence (Köppen climate classification: Csa) during the summer months. This climate is typical of southern France, with mild winters and moderately wet summers. Summers average above 28 °C (82 °F) with little rainfall during the day.

Population

45,996 (2015)

Economy

The newer part of the city (Ville Basse) on the other side of the Aude river (which dates back to the Middle Ages, after the crusades) manufactures shoes, rubber, and textiles. A central AOC winegrowing region is also located there. Tourism associated with the fortifications (Cité) and boat cruising on the Canal du Midi accounts for most of its income. The MKE Performing Arts Academy is also located in Carcassonne. The city of Carcassonne receives about three million visitors per year.

Transport

Carcassonne airport began taking budget flights to and from European airports in the late 1990s, and by 2009 had regular flights to Porto, Bournemouth, Cork, Dublin, Frankfurt-Hahn, London-Stansted, Liverpool, East Midlands, Glasgow-Prestwick, and Charleroi.

Several regional destinations can be reached directly from Carcassonne’s railway station, including Toulouse, Narbonne, Perpignan, Paris, and Marseille. Carcassonne is connected to Toulouse and Narbonne by the A61 motorway.

Language

The language spoken is French. Occitan was historically the language spoken in Carcassonne and throughout Languedoc-Roussillon.
