Located in the Occitanie region in Southern France, Castres is the only subprefecture of the Tarn department. Though it belongs to the Languedoc-Roussillon region, it is not part of the province of Languedoc. There were 41,795 residents in the commune in 2018.
As of 1831, Castres had a population of 12,032, making it the largest town in the Tarn department. The commune proper had a population of 19,483 in 1901 and 34,126 by 1954, making it one of the few industrial towns in Albigeois. However, the decline of its industries led to a decrease in population growth. As the most populous metropolitan area in Tarn, Albi has surpassed Castres. Castres’ population peaked in 1975 and has slowly declined since then. With 104,695 residents (2019), Castres is the center of a functional urban area.
Castres has a long, cold winter and a temperate summer; the winters are long, windy, and partly cloudy. A typical year-round temperature ranges between 35°F and 83°F, rarely falling below 26°F or rising above 94°F. Mid-June to late September is the best time to visit Castres for warm-weather activities.
The city of Castres lies 172 meters (564 feet) above sea level. Occitania is located 79 km east of Toulouse, the capital of Occitania, and 45 km south-southeast of Albi, the capital of Tarn. North and south are intersected by the rivers Agout and Durenque in Castres.
This commune is bordered on its south-eastern side by the Thoré, which flows into the Agout on the western side.
Castrum comes from Latin, meaning “fortified place.” An old Roman fort (castrum) is believed to have been the site of the Benedictine abbey of Saint Benoît, founded in AD 647. As Saint Vincent, the renowned martyr of Spain kept his relics in the abbey-church of Castres, it became an important pilgrimage stop on the international pilgrimage routes to Santiago de Compostela in Spain. Albigeois ranked it the second most important town behind Albi as early as the 12th century. Castres was granted a liberal charter in the 12th century by the famous Trencavel family, viscounts of Albi, despite the decline of its abbey, which was taken over by Saint-Victor abbey in Marseille in 1074. A college of consuls governed Castres under the charter.
In 1229, it surrendered to Simon de Montfort of its own accord and became part of the kingdom of France. The Bishopric of Castres was established in 1317 by Pope John XXII, and Castres was raised to a countship by King John II of France in 1356. The town, however, suffered greatly from the Black Plague in 1347-1348, as well as from the Hundred Years’ War and the actions of the Black Prince of England and the Free Companies. Consequently, Castres entered a rapid decline by the late 14th century. Only 4,000 people were living in the town in 1375, half the population of a century earlier. In 1476, following the confiscation of the possessions of Jacques d’Armagnac, Duke of Nemours, the countship of Castres was awarded to Italian nobleman and adventurer Boffille de Juge (Boffillo del Giudice), a diplomat for King Louis XI. In 1519, King Francis I united the countship to the crown after so much disagreement (a family feud between Boffille de Juge, his only daughter, and his brother-in-law) that the countship was united to the peak.

The Pierre Fabre Group, founded by local tycoon Pierre Fabre, owns Castres Olympique.
