In addition to its river port, the Roman city served as an essential hub of communication through the Via Agrippa and its side roads. For an invasion against Gundomadus and Vadomarius of the Alamanni, Constantius II stationed the Roman 7th Army in Chalon (then called Cabyllona) in 354 AD. The exhibition also includes Niépce’s 1807 Pyréolophore, the world’s first internal combustion engine, and his 1818 dandy horse, for which he coined the term vélocipède.
