Chambery Overview

Chambery is a town in southeast France located in the Alpine region. The medieval Castle of the Dukes of Savoy, with historical exhibits, is located in the old city. A fountain dedicated to 18th-century general Benoît de Boigne stands near Chambery Cathedral. A number of Italian works are on display at the Musée des Beaux-Arts that date from the 14th to the 18th century. A former home to philosopher Jean-Jacques Rousseau can be found in the Museum of Charmettes.

Geography

Chambery is located in a broad valley between the Bauges and the Chartreuse Mountains, on the Leysse River, at a crossroads of ancient routes passing through the Dauphiné (Dofenâ) region of France, Switzerland, and Italy. Over 125,000 people live in the metropolitan area, which extends from the Combe de Savoie vineyard slopes almost to the Lac du Bourget shores, France’s largest natural lake. The city serves as a central rail hub at the midpoint of the high-speed rail line between Turin and Lyon.

History

Chambery was the Savoyard capital from 1295 to 1563 and was closely connected to the House of Savoy. Savoy included a region stretching from Bourg-en-Bresse in the west, across the Alps to Turin, north to Geneva, and south to Nice. As a result, Chambéry declined as Duke Emmanuel Philibert moved his capital to Turin in 1563 to protect Savoy from French provocations.

After Napoleon Bonaparte’s defeat in 1815, the rulers of the House of Savoy in Turin received back the former Duchy and Chambéry from France, which had been annexed by France west of the Alps in 1792. In 1820, the Société Académique de Savoie was founded to foster material and moral progress, now housed in an apartment of the ducal Château, to address urban revitalization needs. In 1860, during the reign of Napoleon III, Piedmont ceded Chambery and lands of the former Duchy, as well as the County of Nice, to France.

Toponymy

During the Middle Ages, when the Duc de Savoie built his castle, the small town of Lemencum changed its name to Lemencum. It has been known as Camefriacum since 1016, Camberiaco since 1029, Cambariacum since 1036, and Cambariaco since 1044. In the following century, Cambariaco became Chamberium (1233), and in 1603 it became Chambers. According to the legend, the name cabrito (a ford situated in a curve) originates from Gaulois. The name may also be derived from the Latin word campus, which means brewer. It may also refer to a room where toll taxes are collected, a currency exchange (cambium), or a market (cambium).

Climate

Chambery lies at the boundary between humid subtropical climates (Cfa) and oceanic climates (Cfb) of the Köppen climate classification system. Despite this, it has a hot climate during the summer and cold weather during the winter, particularly at night, due to its position within France’s interior.

Education

Savoy Mont Blanc University (also known as Chambéry University) was founded in 1979 and had two campuses in Annecy and Chambéry. There are approximately 15,000 students enrolled at the school.

Transport

Chambery Airport provides winter transportation to Chambery. A nonstop TGV service runs between Chambéry-Challes-les-Eaux and Paris-Gare de Lyon from the station.

Local buses are operated by Synchro Bus.

Chambéry tramway, a narrow-gauge steam tram network, served the town from 1892 to 1932.

Demography

As of 2018, 58,833 people were living in the city, compared with 253,430 living in the metropolitan area.

Sport

Chambery Savoie Mont-Blanc Handball, Chambery S.F., and Stade Olympique Chambérien Rugby are all based in Chambery.

Is Chambery worth visiting?

In addition to learning about the Savoie region and how it was annexed to France, the castle is a great place to explore and explore history. Since 1860, the stately stronghold has housed the Préfecture and Conseil Général of the Savoie département. It was once the home of the counts and dukes of Savoy.

What is Chambery known for?

Chambery is the capital of Savoie and the birthplace of the region. There has been both an Italian and a French presence throughout history. A valley in the Alps provides almost 360-degree views of the French Alps, surrounded by the Bauges and Chartreuse mountains.

Best Things to Do in Chambéry (France)

Old Town

Chambéry’s compact core is most people’s idea of the perfect old town – a working university town, not just a museum. Although small, you could wander for hours without feeling like you’ve seen everything.

Place Saint-Léger

Chambery’s main pedestrian thoroughfare, Place Saint-Léger, is more of a long street than a city square. Pink granite pavement covers the street’s length, opening up large seating areas for restaurants and cafes.

Fontaine des Éléphants

A French historical monument and a popular postcard image, the Fontaine des Éléphants dates to 1838. There are four elephants on the plinth of the fountain, one on each side. Only their heads and front legs protrude.

Chambéry Cathedral

This city’s cathedral is small but offers a lot. Some 6,000 square meters of elaborate Italian trompe l’oeil paintings adorn the interior, the largest in Europe and composed in stages in the 1800s.

Musée des Beaux-Arts

Most of the works in this museum are Italian, proving Chambéry hasn’t always been French.

Les Charmettes

The polymath Jean-Jacques Rousseau lived in this pretty country house near Chambéry as a young man.

Château des Ducs de Savoie

This majestic building dominated Chambery’s old town for hundreds of years, serving as the seat of the Lords of Chambery and then the Dukes of Savoie.

Rue Basse du Château

This crevice-like alley in Chambéry’s pedestrianized center is considered the oldest street in the city. The Chambéry artery is very narrow and intersects with several other medieval passageways.

Rotonde Ferroviaire

Built between 1906 and 1910, this colossal circular cast iron behemoth is one of the city’s most significant industrial landmarks. When not in use, the dome houses up to 72 locomotives and has a diameter of more than 100 meters.

Hôtel de Cordon

Here, talks about Chambéry’s history are given, as well as an exhibition on the changing appearance of the city since medieval times and a small collection of models and paintings.
