Charleville-Mezieres Overview
The commune of Charleville-Mézières is in the Ardennes department, Grand Est, in northern France. On the banks of the river Meuse, Charleville-Mézières is located.
History
Originally, Charleville and Mézières were two separate communities on opposite banks of the Meuse, about 1.2km (0.75 mi) apart.
Founded by Charles Gonzaga, the 8th duke of Mantua, Charleville was founded in 1606. Carolopolitans (Carolopolitains or Carolopolitaines) were its inhabitants. Since the 17th century, the town has been prosperous, although its fortifications were dismantled under Louis XIV in 1687. In 1815, the Prussians plundered it. Charleville muskets were made at the former royal armaments factory in Charleville before the factory was relocated and divided between Tulle and Châtellerault. The city produced arms, nails, hardware, wine, spirits, coal, iron, and slate in the 19th century through private firms. There was a spacious port, a theatre, an extensive public library, and a natural history museum.
Historically, the inhabitants of Mézières were called Macerians (Macériens or Macériennes).
A suspension bridge linked the two towns by the mid-19th century. During World War I and II, it was occupied by the German Empire and then by Nazi Germany. The present commune was established in 1966, and Mézières merged with another commune, Le Theux, in 1965. About 51,000 people are living there.
Climate
Charleville-Mézières is generally the coolest city in France, with an average annual temperature of 9°C (48.1°F). Summers are hot, but sometimes, even in the middle of July, night temperatures can drop below five °C (41°F) during the long, cold winters. Located in a temperate oceanic climate zone (Cfb), Charleville-Mézières is under the Köppen-Geiger climate classification.

Culture
The Marionette Theatre is an integral part of the culture of Charleville-Mézières, the “World Capital of Puppetry Arts.” Since 1961, an international puppet festival has been held there every three years, and since 2011, it has been held every two years. A giant automaton of a puppeteer performs a puppet show every hour on the hour in a historic building, as well as the international puppetry institute (Institut International de la Marionnette), which is home to UNIMA’s world headquarters, as well as the International Puppetry Institute. A higher education institution in puppetry also exists in Charleville-Mézières: the École Nationale Supérieure des Arts de la Marionnette (ESNAM).
