Chartres was the capital of the Carnutes, a Celtic tribe, in Gaul. It was one of the most important towns of the Beauce in the Middle Ages. In 1286, a member of the House of Châtillon sold it to the Crown, which gave its name to a county held by the counts of Blois and Champagne.
In 1417, Chartres fell into the hands of the English during the Hundred Years’ War and was reclaimed in 1432. The duchy was elevated to duchy status by Francis I in 1528.
Huguenot leader, Prince of Condé, unsuccessfully besieged Chartres during the Wars of Religion in 1568. The royal troops of Henry IV finally captured it on 19 April 1591. After converting to Catholicism, Henry IV was crowned in the cathedral of Chartres on Sunday, 27 February 1594, the only king of France whose coronation ceremony was not in Reims.
In favor of his nephew, Duke Philippe II of Orléans, Louis XIV raised Chartres from a duchy to a duchy peerage in 1674. A title such as Duke of Chartres was hereditary in the House of Orléans and conferred on the eldest son.
Chartres became an important center of operations during the Franco-Prussian War on 2 October 1870 after being captured by the Germans.
