Chateauroux Overview
Indre is a French department located in central France. Châteauroux is the largest city in Berry and the French capital of Indre. Residents of Castelroussins are known as Castelroussins.
History
Near the river, the old town forms the nucleus of a new, more extensive quarter, bordered by boulevards; St. Christophe and Déols are situated on the right bank of the Indre. Raoul, prince of Déols, built the castle from which the city derives its name in the late 10th century. Under the protection of prince Ebbes of Déols, father of Raoul, the monks of Saint-Gildas-de-Rhuys, founded in Brittany by Saint Gildas, brought his relics to Saint-Gildas of Châteauroux under the Norman raids between 920 and 1008. It was the seat of a seigniory during the Middle Ages, which passed to the Chauvigny from 1207 to 1473 before being elevated to the rank of countship in 1497 by Jean V d’Aumont. During the reign of Henry II, Prince of Condé, it was promoted to the status of a duchy in 1616. Marie Anne de Mailly-Nesle, duchess of Châteauroux, was given the property by Louis XV in 1744 after it returned to the crown in 1736. Prefecture offices are housed in the 15th-century Château Raoul.

The Châteauroux Berrichonne football team was founded in 1883 and is based in Châteauroux. National, the third division of French football, is the team’s current home; the team played one season in Ligue 1 in 1997–98.
