The commune of Cholet is located in the Maine-et-Loire department of western France. After the prefecture of Angers, it has 54,307 inhabitants, making it the second most populous commune in Maine-et-Loire.
Geography
Cholet is situated on an eminence on the right bank of the Moine river, which is crossed by an old bridge. A 50-kilometer drive from Nantes takes you there. Around 107,000 people live in Cholet, the center of Cholet’s Agglomeration community. The city is the seat of the cantons Cholet-1 and Cholet-2, as well as the arrondissement of Cholet.
History
Édouard Charles Victurnien Colbert, count of Maulévrier, the brother of Jean-Baptiste Colbert, established weavers in the town and led to its rise to prosperity. The town was then developed, and Gabriel-François de Rougé and marquis de Cholet strengthened its economy. “Arcades Rougé” is the central commercial mall named after him, which opened in 2009.
At the beginning of the French Revolutionary War, the town played a vital role in the counter-revolutionary struggle in Vendée, culminating in October 1793 with the victory of the republicans at the Battle of Cholet, which was followed by brutal government repression.
It was reported in Corbett’s Herald on January 10th, 1885, that a temporary theatre had collapsed, killing 150 people.
